Hymn of Hope September Edition - 2on2
We know that September is quite far away but we feel like doing a teaser anyway. Since quakeworld players take summerbreaks, so will the Hymn of Hope tournament. We feel that it's smarter to host the biggest tournament thus far in the start of autumn instead of several small tournaments during the summer when nobody plays.

The Hymn of Hope crew are happy to announce the Hymn of Hope September Edition!
This edition will be different from the previous ones in a very obvious way - it will be a 2on2 tournament with more prizemoney than ever before!

QuakeWorld hasn't seen many 2on2 tournaments except for the one hosted at QHLAN. We feel that it would be interesting to see how big the interest is for such an unusual tournament. The prizepool will also be bigger than ever before and we hope to see way more signups than in the dueltournaments! Remember that this tournament is for everyone and every division and skill of players!

Please note that this is just a teaser announcement and a bigger, more complete announcement will follow in the end of the summer.

We have not opened the signups yet, as the date hasn't been set. Stay tuned!

Do you have any thoughts about this? Don't hesitate to head over to the Hymn of Hope feedback thread and give us your opinion!

We would also like to remind everyone that you can contribute to the prizepool if you want. You can easily donate money at the Hymn of Hope donation page if you want, which will help increasing the prizepool further. Any donation is very appreciated, be it 1 euro or 100 euro! Thank you for yor contribution.

Please give us your feedback in the Hymn of Hope feedback thread and let us know what you think about the Hymn of Hope September Edition!

More information will come in the end of the summer and we hope that you are just as excited about this 2on2 tournament as we are!

Stay tuned!

New tournament is cool. Game mode (2on2) is not so cool.

Well, with the lack of interest in the last tournament, even though it featured a 4 times bigger prizepool than previous tournaments, we figured we'd try something different. We are not happy with 50-60 signups for a dueltournament with 400 euro prizepool when other tournaments get hundreds. The first tournament had more signups though for some reason, even though it only had 1/4th of this edition's prizepool. Anyway, since we are hosting this tournament monthly, we will get many chances to try different things. :-) Perhaps in the future we'll see a free for all tournament as well, who knows? We have many months ahead of us :-) But we hope that the interest for 2on2 is bigger with the absence of that "duel-pressure/stress". 2on2 is a little bit more relaxed, but still needs both teamplay and individual skill to be really good at. We'll see how it goes! If you have any other and perhaps a little more constructive criticism, Ake Vader, feel free to tell us about it in the HoH feedback thread :-)

Over and out,
Andeh

The idea that more money will attract more players overall doesn't seem very likely to me. I really hope it will attract more top players in upcoming seasons though. I guess first tourney had more participants because many people wanted to show some support of a fresh concept rather than being in it for the dough.

I would appriciate a tournament's popularity by the number of spectators rather than participants, and number of spectators is probably directly related to the number of highly skilled (div0) players signed up that acually would have a chance of winning the tournament.

I would watch more matches in a tournament that has 50 signups with 10 div0 players than one having 100 signups with 5 div0 players since it would have more exciting games.

So please, div0'ers; show some support in upcoming HoH tourneys!

Actually, I only played this time for the money. And the €70 for 3rd place saved my ass this month (had 0,2 euro on the bank with one week to payday)

I didn't practise as I used to do, and felt really of out shape, so I'm just happy I could get a top spot purely on routine and with no instictive feel (fingertoppskänsla).

Really looking forward to a good 2on2 tournament again! I love this mode. Hopefully many do signup.

I think swing has some valid points. Overall, the may edition seemed more professional, even with less signups. I have no clue about the amount of specs (qtv+stream), but i think that would be a better indication for success rather than signups. Since you want a broader approach, i would advice advertising for the tournament through more channels than just qw.nu and chanbot. One day before the tournament start, get it out on facebook, esr, twitter, etc.

2on2 has mainly been a curiosity for me, but who says it can't be taken serious and create some good games if theres money on the line?

I agree that tournament success is defined by spectators and not players. I didn't say the May edition was not a success because I believe it was. We had solid viewers, 50+ qtv spectators on basically every game from the quarterfinals and forward (even my game vs LocKtar before the quarterfinals even started attracted over 50 qtv spectators, and that's not including streamviewers). The tournament was a success but since one-day tournaments do have dropouts every time, I would like more people to play as well and not just spectate.

About money attracting more players: Of course the fact that money is involved doesn't attract more div3ish players since they don't have a shot at winning money anyway. A tournament does however always get more interesting when money IS involved. People might also get more nervous than usual and things are simply more interesting in general. We will not have a bigger prizepool continuisly every month, the fact that May was 4 times larger was thanks to some really great donators, and the fact that September is gonna be even bigger is because we have so many months to collect money for it. October is probably going to be smaller with our "original" prizepool - 150 euro.

About game modes: we will keep trying new things. Perhaps a kenya tournament, perhaps a FFA tournament, perhaps even 4on4. We'll see; like I said; we have so many months to try new things and in the end we'll know which tournaments were most successful and then we'll probably stick to those :-)

What if there would be 2 signups in parallel? one for those who wanna competing for the money, and another one for those who just wanna play in a tourney.
In this way the quality of the matches would be higher for the spectators ( they would follow ofc the "money tourney" ) but maybe you could increase a little bit the number of the overall signups.

I mean, I'm fine if a mid-low div2 win against me, but it makes no sense for me(nor for the spectators) to sign up to a single elemination tourney where i can meet with Rikoll in the 1st round.

Hello Jon Snow;
I can understand your thoughts to an extent but we do not feel the same. It is a one day tournament and no matter whether you face Rikoll first or if you face a new player first, the tournament will still be a quickie. That's the beauty of it. Everyone except the winner loses sometime in the tournament and the tournament is short for everyone. I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt your soul to sign up for a tournament even if you get Rikoll in the first game. Then it's just to play that game and hope for an easier opponent next tournament. This is the case for everyone, and by signing up you also contribute to the tournament by making it larger. I would definetly sacrifice 20 minutes of one day every month to any tournament in QuakeWorld and I hope there are more people like me.

I also do not stand a chance against Rikoll just yet, but I practice to eventually be able to compete with the very top. Until then, I simply have to accept the fact that I may get knocked out in the first round. I still enjoy playing the tournament though and I know that every minute in the game, no matter if I lose or not, I contribute to the tournament. That's well enough for me to sign up for a one day tournament.

give the small prize to participation lottery winners, just have to play and not drop out and be picked out of a hat.
2012-05-24, 21:07
It would be great if it helped reactivate the game and bring back some players who once played at a highly competetive level. Personally I don't like the 2on2 mode, but there are many who do and hopefully the news will spread and many will join.

Andeh, an in parallel 2 div tourney would be even more quickie. ,)
And for who is it good if a div3 faces with a div0? waste of time for everybody.
It would be ok if we would speak here about Ownage or Duelmania, but it's a tourney for money.
For those who has the slightest chance to earn some money it's fun of course, but for the rest this tourney gives less chance to have fun then the other 1div tourneys, 'cause of the single elemination. i can understand and accept that single elemination is needed to be able to cover the tourney in one day, but why can't we make a 2 div tourney? Pro and amateur. everybody can decide to where he wanna sign up.

Just going to state some facts as I see them.

1. Money most specifically attracts the players who are already good and feel like they have a chance on it. It´s both fun and hey, another couple of euros on the account won´t hurt either.
2. Players who feel like they havn´t a snowballs chance in hell of getting a dime feels like their participation is meaningless. Some reasons suggesting this: "It´s more about of the money and not the pure fun", "This will attract so many div0, will be boring if I can´t atleast get a few good games", "I´ll rather watch.".
3. These amounts of money won´t tear down mountains, revitalize QW or bring back old school pros etc. These amounts of money will basically spark the interest of the current div0:s a little. This is not a bad thing, more on the contrary. But you can´t expect it to do miracles either.

So that´s basically my take on things.

The same things are always being said, about salvation, about EQL and now about this: "Why isn´t there an amateur league aswell, to include everyone?"

While this seems to be some kind of theme, I´m going to share my view upon it aswell:
Firstly, the vast majority of people arranging these tournaments are good, seasoned players who love the game and have a passion for competition. They are so passionate that not only do they play the game, they give up their free time to create a meaningful activity for others. Unfortunately, what most people are passionate about is the high end competition. That´s the same everywhere in the world and this scene is no exception.

To conclude this rambling:
I believe that more exposure is the way to go. Many hard hours are being put into this and one can tell. Keep up with what you´re doing! Coal doesn´t become diamond over night

ok, im drunk now, but dont aim for the most signed players, go for most possible viewers.. its bad when its 150 signups, but no spectators, i like it more when top players play and 1000 spectators.. so exposure is everything, get the game more publlic puss för fan synthjäövar

I think cara's comment are quite accurate and agree with them. Regarding including "the rest of the scene", and perhaps even introducing new players, i think there should be other tournaments/leagues focusing on this solely.

I always liked 2on2. As I just started my comeback to qw, I'm happy to see these leagues!

Any chance to the a second incarnation of this 2on2 cup?
