QuakeWorld.nu - Map Archive
After 4 years in development hell the QuakeWorld.nu Map Archive is finally back online.

However it's current state is very limited, as only a small amount of content is made available.

If you would like to help change that, and start adding content to the site, or if you just have a lot of map content laying around (texture, readme, bsp, info), please don't hesitate to contact me (Zalon), on IRC or via email

I'm looking for someone to be responsible for the subsite, and people who would be willing to help gathering content.

I have roughly 90 texture packs for popular maps, that needs to be added, I've already added all the packs I had for aerowalk, but I need help with adding the rest to the site.

The original site was lost in the 2005 hack of the QuakeWorld.nu server. The site's database and third party applications had to be rebuild for the site to function again.

Worst project ever...

It took so long to get it up and running again, every time someone took up the task and progress started showing, they would disappear entirely.

Then in november/december of last year, I decided to finish it myself... but then when it was done, our admin had left. I'm happy to finally get this off my hands.

It's a solid example of the phrase; "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself" -hopefully this isn't the case with the content soon to be added

Thx to everyone who helped along the line.

fantastic, finally!
it's a bit unlucky timing that this comes at the same time as quaddicted.com/multiplayer/ it would be nice to focus the manpower on one database.
still, great job on getting this up again.

Spirit was offered to join in, he declined. Now and in the past.

can regular users upload content?
2009-07-04, 21:21
They can make contributions, if they have a QWnu user...

But some easier option to upload content might be preferred, we'll see what happens if I find a maintainer.

Zalon is a superman.

Heh, this is the nicest compliment on my work so far.
Glad to see that some pressure was created. Competition is always fun.

Seeing how this distributes id's files and of course no ZIP files I am glad I quit earlier. Shame on you.

Oh and I have to correct "Spirit was offered to join in, he declined. Now and in the past."

Back in 2006 (I guess) Sassa asked me if I wanted to join the QW.nu crew and help out with the upcoming maps.qw.nu relaunch. I did. And then I waited. And waited. And got told that "yes, it is almost done", "working on it" etc. And then I waited even more. I always assumed it was a new site being half-build or something. Seeing now that it is just the old one, with none of my criticism considered, I cannot believe what false hopes I had.

I quit because I was sick and tired. I did not decline any "offer", your majesty. There, qwdrama omg.

Hehe spirit, if you by "nicest compliment on my work so far" mean that I decided to make it public on the same day as you made your archive available, then that's just pure coincidence, and you should know, as I contacted you last week for your contribution.

The "distribution of id files", there seems to be a problem with the Original Quake map group, and it's the one holding the "copyrighted" flag. So that is why it's possible to download non-free maps.

Regarding your involvement with the project, I don't know what deal you had with Sassa, as it was in the period where I wasn't active with QW.nu. But as I wrote in my first comment, there has been numerous people involved in this project to get it up running, and they have all disappeared or abandoned it.

I wrote to you in the end of last year, and asked if you wanted to participate. At the time I had the old site fully working, you declined.

So don't say that none of your criticism was considered, as it was never presented to me.

Oh, and what is the problem with not using zip files? All the readme's are available on the site.

If it's for historical reasons, a download of the files "original form" could be added.
2009-07-04, 22:34
Oh, let's just move on and both enjoy our creations. I just wanted to make clear that "declining an offer" is giving a very wrong image about my decision to quit and made me sound like an ass.
2009-07-04, 22:53
Oh, I didn't want to make you look like and ass, I'm not really interested in scaring away one of the few dedicated contributers that the quakeworld scene actually has.

I was just telling dEus that you weren't interested. everything you wrote about your involvement with the project is true, but that was really out of my hands.

And yes a new site was also in the works in the past, aswell as numerous rebuilds, as I also posted in my first comment.

I would still however like to know what the problem with not using zip files is?

Great work Zalon! I hope people will start uploading their own content so the site can flourish again. It's especially the very accessible texture theme part that i liked about the old site. Being able to just browse any map of ones liking and get a list of possible texture sets that are ready out of the box is $$$.

How much automation is there when uploading content?
2009-07-04, 23:23
Everything except screenshots are automated, and then of course the author and gameplay info.

Seeing that site again brings back some old feelings. When I originally joined the qw.nu map crew my job was to expand and collect info on all the maps (readme files, author names (and aliases), e-mail adresses, all kinds of stuff for several hundred maps. The archive just grew and grew, and when it was done I had put down several weeks of intensive work, digging through old archives, sites and readme files. I was proud of the work we had done and I believe the concept we had going was unique. When qw.nu got hacked my initial thoughts were that all the data was lost. Up until now I didn't have the faintest idea that the site was to be resurrected. So seeing the site again all empty like that deeply saddens me and servers as a reminder to always keep backups of important data. I never really put my heart into the game again after that. Lesson learned.

Nice work Zalon!

There seems to be a lot of "mickey mouseing" in the qwscene. Can't say that i'm surprised, this is what happends when kids is going to organize something. No pride for their work, and lots of fuckin around. I can really understand Drugs-Bunny, i had been furious. Who is the twat that did not keep a backup of the site? Haha.. Well, hope Zalon is more seriuos than his predecessors.
2009-07-05, 10:40
What is mickey mousing? I don't assume you mean the technique used in movies.
2009-07-05, 13:13
Yeah Bugsy, not really sure about that "mickey mouseing" concept either, but I was also pretty shocked when I got back from the army, and saw that no backups were available.

If you think about all the time used, not just by the contributors, but also by jezaja. On all of his qw projects (serv-u, exposure, maps, etc), I would have thought he would have kept at least some kind of backup.
2009-07-05, 13:34
"Mickey Mouse" is a typically derogatory term used to refer to something which is not taken seriously, not very professional etc. Most (not all) ventures undertaken by the QW community over the years fall into this category, which isn't surprising really when you think about it. That doesn't mean that the people involved aren't talented, just that things can be done in quite an amateur way (sometimes using really crude/basic tools) and not really adhering to much in the way of standards.
2009-07-05, 15:13
Nice to see that the site is back. It would be nice with a "recent activity" page where you could follow the uploads and such.
2009-07-05, 17:43
thank you so much !
