MVDSV reliable sounds
You all know how it can be annoying when sounds get lost due to packet loss during games. This problematic behaviour has caused some changes in MVDSV that is supposed to help with dealing the missing sounds during packet loss, and this is something that people will need to test now.
The following servers have been updated with the new MVDSV build (revision 847):
Quakeworld.fi
Troopers.fi
Wargamez.dk
Qw.intarweb.dk

The change will not work without users "enabling" the sound system first. To do this, you will need to use the following commands in your client (all clients supported of course):

setinfo rsnd 1

To disable it, you will need to do:

setinfo rsnd ""

Notice that disabling is really "" instead of using value 0. The feature is toggleable because if it bugs, you of course want to disable it so the change will not break anything when playing normally. What we need is people testing this feature, especially those suffering from packet loss and also feedback. If all goes well and the feature works as it should, we can enable this by default for all players and servers.

Have fun testing it

hard to test such thing as you don't know when your client will lose sound. but, if with pl and with this feature enabled the sound never breaks it sure is a great feature.

Holy shit, this is the best feature to be added in a long time! There's nothing worse than playing a duel with crucial dropped sounds deciding the match.

All I need now is a few servers within 65ms of me so I can test it.

Yeah this was quickly implemented, I put forward the suggestion this morning to qqshka and not long after he had implemented a possible solution for it. When it comes to testing I know that I personally often miss sounds and I've spoken to other people whom it has happened to as well so these people are most likely the best candidates to find out if this works or not.

I have a problem of all particles staying (not fading) and eventually not showing anymore... could this be a packet loss problem? only happens on QTV

While it's totally offtopic I think you should try demo_setspeed 100.

I'm sooo sorry! As I have some pl I tought it would be the problem...
Thanks

Renzo, now that you mention it... That is a bug in recent ez/qtv versions, as in the past you were able to pause a mvd stream. This should be fixed if possible, as it helped syncing with audio streams. I would report it, but don't know if it's an ezQuake issue or a QTV one :/

I do however think it started when the delay on game start was added, to allow say_game in prewar.

Pausing and speed adjustment still works if you have qtv_adjustbuffer 0.

Any reason why disabling is "" instead of "0" ?
2009-02-18, 16:55
By default it should be disabled and default value is not-set which is achieved by setting it to "".
2009-02-18, 17:46
It defaults to disabled, should be pretty clear from the news item.

If it DOES work properly, we can remove the enabling/disabling part, that's why people test test test and test it

Not enough feedback yet to decide to enable it by default.
Any laggy people?

If you wish to provide feedback, the MVDSV forums are the best place to do so:
