A couple of small QW utilities have been developed recently:

QW Pings Database - A website that contains information about players' pings to all the QW servers out there. The comparison feature will help you and your rival find the ultimate server to play on in no time! Everyone is more than welcome to add their ping dump too. [made by JohnNy_cz wiki]
QuakeTV Look Up - A tool that silently runs in the backround, and gives you a message box once there's a crowded match with lots of spectators going on. You will never miss important matches! It will also save you the trouble of constantly refreshing the QuakeTV page or checking for irc spams. [made by rxr wiki]

I really hope the whole community will start using JohnNy_cz's ping tool. It will prevent unnecessary match delays, games with unfair pings and might save alot of admin trouble in tournaments.

I also urge you all to harass the developers with suggestions on how to improve their utilities!

A ping database is a brilliant idea. Great job Johnny! The QTV Look Up also sounds like a great tool. It could however also shout when there are FFA games going on with more than X players (customizable?). Perhaps this could be added in a later version.

For the ping database, wouldn't it be possible to do that by actually polling a bunch of servers (very) regularly to find an average pings for all players? That of course assumes people play frequently and always use the same nick. And maybe the bandwidth requirements would be excessive?

^Problem with that is that it would exclude any servers that a given player never plays on. Ping database is an inherently better way of doing it because it means that all players have been measured against the same servers.

Of course, if people start using it seriously, then it is arguably open to abuse (players tampering with their dump file to make it look like they have higher pings to chosen servers than they actually do, in the hope of getting a more favourable server).

Good tool just for a general guide though.
A useful addition would be to also record Qizmo pings somewhere if that is feasible, so that we have a quick reference to find out what proxies are good for a given server.

Humm, commented on pingdb in the thread. QTV Look Up seems kinda suspicious to me. Adding a new service that no doubt queries some service x times. System resources, added lag, are these concerns unfounded? Remember, we play qw, not some pussy game where players don't even notice 0.1 fps fluctuations and half ms lag!

It's trivial to add caching in the middle point, which is MetaQTV here.

While you are at it... add some stats to MetaQTV.

niomic: Maybe not unfounded but think about all the server browers which are already in use. Do they impact the servers? My guess is that QTV Look Up does not do much harm, if any at all. But I really like the idea of a MetaQTV.
