hello

yea me and dirtbox are the new vps world experts. if you want to run a server, ask us and you'll get the best deal.

one of my personal goals was to increase the number of qwfwd proxies. so ive asked mli to give me all the emails of server admins.
i have sent email to hundreds of server admins, of all quake games. since qwfwd already supports q3, those responded quicker. would be cool if qwfwd supported q2, im sure we would get some more qwfwd's...

Here's a list of qwfwd recently setup:
  • au.besmella.com QWfwd au.besmella.com:30000
  • Quake Brazil [QWFWD] 191.96.5.222:30000
  • Team Kuk BR [QWFWD] 54.94.131.164:30000
  • eX Proxy ex.2ex.in:30000
  • Amazon EC2 Ireland KTX QWfwd ie.besmella.com:30000 removed because of bad routing
  • NQUAKESV_HOSTNAME QWfwd sergejc.com:30000
  • old.nl.besmella.com QWfwd Amsterdam old.nl.besmella.com:30000
  • nl.besmella.com KTX QWfwd nl.besmella.com:30000
  • yaem.org QWfwd yaem.org:30000
  • Zombie Wipeout QWFWD qw.zwo.no:30000
  • q3srv.ru:1 q3srv.ru:1
  • unknown qw2.ru:30000
  • Burgh Gaming QWFWD bgel02.burgh.net:30000
  • miami.usa.besmella.c om KTX QWfwd miami.usa.besmella.com:30000
  • usa.besmella.com QWfwd - Los Angeles usa.besmella.com:30000
  • jp.besmella.com QWfwd jp.besmella.com:30000
  • DRAGON QWfwd www.kapos-net.hu:27502
  • sfo.usa.besmella.com QWFWD sfo.usa.besmella.com:30000
  • ar.besmella.com
  • br.besmella.com
  • cl.besmella.com:30000

ill try to keep this updated

Chile has recently lost all of it's QW servers. There were some games going on but now people do not have a place shoot each other with rockets. I've been thinking of getting a VPS from Edis and setting up some servers there. A good place to hunt for VPS's at exotic locations is Exoticvps.com.

We really want to get a server up in Hawaii that has local routing to both Australia and USA but we cannot find one yet.

I've been trying to find one too but routing always seems to go from au <-> los angeles <-> hawaii.

Yes exactly. Some even go Australia-Singapore-LA-Hawaii... Even though the cables go Australia-Hawaii-LA

http://www.submarinecablemap.com/#/submarine-cable/southern-cross-cable-network-sccn

Our other option was getting one in New Zealand but the pings would be so high for Americans I doubt anyone would play there... (Routing is direct both ways in NZ)

We might actually move these servers. The existing Irish servers at ktx.quake.ie actually ping lower for most people. I ping only 4ms less but that is the difference between getting 26ms and 38ms in game. We will monitor how much they are used and if they are not then we will move the server.

Yeah the connections round Ireland can be a bit slow. I'm playing from Belfast in Northern Ireland, my connection to the quake.ie servers is usually around 35. To put this in context, my connection to BaseQ in France is about 35 and xs4all in Holland is usually around 40!!

Hey Ragga, I'd be interested to see if North Ireland goes via London to Ireland.

Can you post a traceroute to ie.besmella.com and ktx.quake.ie?

Cheers

i've talked to admin of Sobol UK servers, which have great ping to nl and france... he is hosting them at rackspace, which is a bit expensive.
he also told me that in 6 months those servers will be moved to aws ec2 located in ireland..

if you want to host a server or anything, we can give u tips. msg us.

Even cheaper in USA. These guys will do a server for $1/month: http://www.chicagovps.net/openvz.html

It is only for 128MB of RAM but it is able to burst higher. We are using the same specs on our Miami servers and they are able to run 1x Qizmo, 2x KTX and 1x qwfwd.

New update... We just temporarily started up new servers in the following locations and tested pings between them (and from Sydney/Los Angeles):
  • Oregon
  • North California
  • Tokyo
  • Singapore
The interesting thing is that pings between both N.California/Oregon to Tokyo AND Sydney to Tokyo are both 120. So potentially we can see some equal ping games between USA and Australia @ 120ms. Expect a server up there soon!

We will take you up on that

We actually need 3 volunteers. Amazon is offering FREE VPS servers (1 per person) for 12 months. Which means we can get servers up for free in the following locations but we just need people to sign up an account and create a linux server there which won't cost you a cent for a year (shut them down once they are no longer free). We've already done the groundwork for testing latency at each of these locations:
  • US East (N. Virginia) - Need volunteer
  • US West (Oregon) - Need volunteer
  • US West (N. California) - Up now (big thanks to Rikoll)
  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo) - Up now (mushi)
  • Asia Pacific (Sydney) - Up now (dirtbox)
  • South America (São Paulo) - Up now (kuk) but maybe down again.
  • EU (Ireland) - Bad routing, no point
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore) - Bad routing, no point
All you need to do is sign up an account for AWS EC2 http://aws.amazon.com/free/ and do the verification check and give myself or mushi the login details and we will do everything else. You just need to put 12 months in to your calendar to let us know to shut them down again.

This week we saw some games being played between players who previously could never play against each other:
  • / dirtbox (120ms) vs Kernell (130ms) - on the new Miami servers.
  • / dirtbox (120ms) vs auei (130ms) - on the new Miami servers.
  • BogoJoker (130ms) vs phelon (130ms) - on the new Tokyo servers.
  • BogoJoker (130ms) vs sting (130ms) - on the new Tokyo servers.
For the people willing to play with a bit higher latency we are already seeing new match ups being played that were never seen before! We definitely have the possibility for a world-wide high ping tourney
