Åke Vader is a Swedish QuakeWorld player with a history that dates back almost all the way to 1996. While he may not be the most competitive player anymore, he can be spotted on the xs4all free for all server and in the odd 4on4 mix game.

Contributions to the QuakeWorld scene has mainly been through the European Quake League site once upon a time, the now put to rest Refragged news site and countless posts in the QuakeWorld.nu forum. His occupation is within quality assurance engineering and in his free time he tries to stay fit and enjoy all that life has to offer!

Refragged 1on1 rookie tournament
I've had a new tournament site in the works for a very long while now and finally it seems like i might have something to use after a couple of bugs are ironed out. Let's smash two flies in one stroke and use it for a rookie tournament!
The QuakeWorld rookie scene has been suffering a bit since the last edition of Ignition rookie tournament was finished in December last year. While i think it was a fun tournament to run and considering it was quite a success with a few new players trying out the game for the first time, it's a shame that another tournament wasn't started at the beginning of the year.

It is my firm belief that in order for this game to actually gain players (instead of just hoping for old players to come back) we need these kind of rookie tournaments on a regular basis. We also need to search for new sources of players for these tournaments. Word of mouth is the best commercial in the world and when people have fun playing other new players in tournaments, they will of course tell all their friends about this awesome game where you juggle people in the air with the rocket launcher!

As i have been working on a new tournament site for a very long while now and am starting to get very close to something usable, i would like to try it out for a Refragged 1on1 Rookie Tournament in a few weeks from now. All that is missing is a couple more features and a few bugs ironed out, then i think the site is in a good enough condition to stand its first trial. You might wonder why I'm not using the PHPTourney site again and that's because i want to use this site also for other tournaments in the future. Hosting a rookie tournament is simply to get the ball rolling.

However, to run a rookie tournament i would need help with the following things:
  • Commercal / advertising on forums and what not about the tournament
  • Administrative support
  • News writers
  • Bonus: GFX guru to make the site h!o!t!

Care to help?

Sounds good! My intention is to have about the same setup as last time, i.e. one group with complete beginners, and perhaps another one with rookies who have been playing for a year or who come from other similar games.

Let's hook up on IRC and lay out some kind of plan for it all.

Sounds awesome bps. I'll see if i can figure out what i want and zip things up in a neat package for editing. Currently i use an adapted template which is OK but it could really be more Quakeish with a cool logo that gives a sense of branding.

What goals should rookie players have? Yes, rookie tournaments might be nice and good, but without tournaments for experienced players or goals to achieve, I don't really expect new players to pick up this game, let alone invest more precious time other than playing in this tournament.

I fully agree andy - the whole chain has to be there in order for it to feel meaningful for a player to continue playing after getting past the first hurdles. However, i think other people will arrange these kinds of tournaments and so I'm focusing on getting new players into action instead as that's where i left off with Ignition and i think it's simply an interesting task. I also think they won't have as high expectations on the site itself as it will lack frag statistics and what not in the beginning.

The analysis i made regarding other tournaments ended up in Hymn of Hope for 2on2, EQL for 4on4 (and possibly draft?) and hopefully someone will host some kind of 1on1 tournament for the seasoned players, be it ladder or Duelmania style.

I think the Thunderdome tournament did nicely for rookies after ignition.

VVD would like to run Thunderdome again. Perhaps you two can join forces. I think one great rookie tournament is better than two competing ones!

Ye, Phil - u are right! I totally agree!
I made season 2 at http://quakephil.com/thunderdome/?sid=19 few days ago and search admins.
Signups already opened, but no annonce yet. I think we'll make annonce at this weekend - .qw, qw.nu, qw.ru.

Ake Vader, you are welcome as admin (if you agree) atleast of rookies divisions!

P.S. Phil, plz, correct my english if I made mistakes. :-]

Guys, can you make 2 more divs for that upcoming tourney? NA-pro and NA-rookie.
Should be awesome to have any qw activities in North America since majority of players do not play in euro tourneys due to huge ping. (180 in my case)

How is the tourney coming?
