Hi,

I'm not really into multiplayer but have recently been using EzQuake to play singleplayer maps as I've become addicted to the qw physics, and have a hard time going back to other (singleplayer) clients now.
I haven't had any problems when only playing custom maps, but when trying out mods with modified progs.dat (e.g Scourge of Armagon) I haven't been as lucky.

I know about setting sv_forcenqprogs to 1, and that works well, except certain maps (like hip1m3, hip1m4) crash on load, and the only error message I get is "SV_Error: Program Error". Not exactly helpful. If I set sv_forcenqprogs to 0, the maps load fine, but obviously without the new/modified entities that would otherwise be in the mod I'm trying. It seems like there's something in the modified progs that makes the game crash, but when I don't get any specific error message it's pretty tough to find out exactly what it is.

I also know about the supposed fix from this thread, downloading and renaming some progs files, but it didn't really change anything. I'm using EzQuake 2.0 stable at the moment by the way, tried out some other versions (1.8, 2.1) as well without any luck.

I know it should be possible to play the mission packs/mods with Ez (refer to this let's play, for instance), but I can't wrap my brain around how, or why it keeps crashing for that matter.

Any help/insight appreciated.

Cheers

ZQuake ( http://zquake.frag.ru/ ) might work for you. I used it to play through most maps in mission packs I and II without any problems. No need to set any cvars, it will automatically load progs.dat for NQ mods.

Use the "development" version, http://zquake.frag.ru/files/zquake-win32-0.17b2845.zip

The spprogs.dat file from the thread you mentioned used to be necessary to play the mission packs in the olden times, before ZQuake and ezQuake learned to employ the original progs.dat (which is packaged in the mods' pak0.pak).

Cheers mate, that worked like a charm! Tried a couple of other mods as well and they appear to work as they should.

However certain large maps that exceed normal model limits won't load. I tried digs04, and got this error:

CALL1 466(precache_model)precache_model()
items.qc : item_rockets
<NO FUNCTION>
PF_precache_model: overflow

as well as digs06, where I simply got this: Host_Error: Map has too many models

Is there a way to exceed the engine's precache limits, perhaps with a command-line option?

Also, I play with fov 130 and thusly have to resize the viewmodel so it doesn't look like it's floating right in front of me or look unnaturally long. In Ez I'd use r_viewmodelsize, however I can't find any equivalent cvar here.

It makes no sense to try more and more modern Singleplayer maps with engines that were never developed with the idea of supporting them.

digs04, as evident from the link you provided, requires an engine with increased limits.
You could try http://www.fteqw.com/ -- it is a hybrid QW + NQ engine supporting a whole bunch of extensions; I'm not sure though if it will let you have QW physics while using a NQ progs.dat.

No equivalent r_viewmodelsize in ZQuake, I'm afraid.

Yeah, I kinda thought it wouldn't be possible to play those maps, but it's no big deal, figured I'd ask just in case.

Thanks anyway!

Use Quakespasm or DirectQ. Singleplayer maps are not designed for Quakeworld physics anyways...

What? I mostly meant bunny hopping and air control.

Yes, air control, bunny hopping and the routine use of rocket jumps.

The most glaring example must be e2m1, where any noob of today can strafe-jump from one balcony to another, finishing the level in a matter of seconds.

Spirit, in single player mode NetQuake has exactly the same amount of air control as QuakeWorld. Bunny-hopping is also possible, as evidenced by the later Quake Done Quick demos, albeit less efficient due to a slowdown when touching the ground, absent in QuakeWorld.
