As a reminder, QW-DEV has its own maps repository that lets you download maps really easily:

http://maps.qw-dev.net

Just add the name of the map you are looking for at the end of the url and you're all set!
(ex: http://maps.qw-dev.net/aerowalk.bsp)

And by that you disregard the map authors by not distributing their zip files.

You do realize that only a fraction will bother reading any of the readmes or credits txts there might possibly be? It's more like an extra work and annoyance to unzip the map from some archive.

The truth is, most of these maps go to some servers' maps directory. The person putting the map there can use simple wget command, not having to cleanup additional .jpgs or whatever files the archive might end up with, and also like above, those files won't get read by the person getting them most likely.

Finally, people get their maps usually from server, in which case there is no way player could ever read or get any additional files, since the server only pushes the .bsp to the player.

authors tends to put nicks in map greeting msg, you see it each time map is changed, not everyone ofc, but it is a good practice though. Much more reliable than zip :E Well, if map is worthwhile players may google author anyway.

It's not only about name of the author, but also when was the map created, what it is intended for (game modes), what items are in it, whether there are custom textures, homepage of the author, contact, etc.

For those that mention more than their name...
I am of course willing to provide zip files, txt files or whatever the authors want me to provide with the map but the point is that probably more than 85% of the players only care about the map. That's why I tried to provide them with a super easy way of getting a map they don't have, just as would a server as qqshka mentionned.
