Miku's and Tonik's ideas are both really good. Implement them already!

I would modify the 1 second part a bit tho. Maybe time could be 2-3secs instead. Also something to overcome that if you are already moving, so that the request doesn't break immediately (even if you would agree to break).
Maybe only jumping once would break the request?

edit: or well, better idea maybe is if you just keep moving for 2-3secs that would break the request.

You guys are really over thinking this one. It just needs to implemented in a very simple way, and then we can see if there are some problems.

To see how little it gets abused and how well it works in competitive duel game, look at Quake 3 and QuakeLive. To test how it affects movement with air control try Warsow, it's surprisingly easy to continue jumping after the timeout.

So, just get the feature implemented and then deal with the problems if they actually exist.

KTX has had pause implemented for more than two years now. All you need to do is convince the server admin to add "pauseable 1" to server configs.

But that is pausing, we want autopause when a player is timing.

Make it so that pressing pause doesn't immediately pause the server, but rather broadcasts a message, "awsum[KilleR] requested a timeout. Stand still for 1 second if you agree".

Everything that requires the other player to do something is a bad idea, as it will still break the game.

If we take the LocKtar - Milton game as an example... Milton had to go all the way to RA before he knew that LocKtar was timing, if he then had issued a "timeout/pause", then the game was already broken, as he would be standing next to LocKtar after the timeout ended.

While if it happens automatically when a player is timing, then everyone is where they should be when the game continues.

This should be very easy to add to KTX, as KTX already have a trigger for when a player is timing, atm most servers are set to warn after 5seconds.

I still think user requested pause doesn't cover all situations because in a duel if you are timing out then you can't request the pause (as you have no connection to the server). So it would be down to the opponent to request pause, which he might not do, or only when it suits him, or in the high intensity game he doesn't realise that his opponent is timing out until he's already shot him.
