Hello,

Update 28.9.2009: The Tomtefortress site is up at http://www.elimi.jossain.com/tomte2009/
The info of this post is getting a bit outdated, check the site for updated information

I have heard some rumors about Tomtefortress happening again this winter! Thats why we should have a thread like this on the forums.

This is only a discussion, not the actual rules, we do not know yet who will be organizing.

As for who will be organizing? Hopefully Term . The team who organized last year would surely be happy to do it as well if Term has more pressing issues. (Elimi, Taneli, Ilex, Gizmo and me).

As there is still plenty of time before the traditional time of year for Tomte, I would like to start a discussion so that we could make the tournament more enjoyable and accessible for all who wish to participate.

Important things to discuss would be:
- When
- Team composition
- Maps
- Duration of tournament

When?
Most likely it will happen in December or January. December would be more suitable for the whole Tomte theme, but at least in Finland there are many parties thrown on the December weekends, which would in turn have an impact on the amount on participants. The organizers would surely like to hear some opinions on this.

Team composition
Traditionally the teams have been mostly old clans + some fresh teams. The drawback is that usually this leads to 1-2 teams packed with people who have been actively playing - leading to some steamrollings + maybe a even final. Suggestions have been made about a system where a handful of team captains would be chosen from the top players, and those in turn would take turns to pick players from the remaining pool of players. A reason for doing something like this would be to give every interested player a chance to participate.

Maps
Mostly Tomtefortress has been played on a special map-of-the-year, selected by the Tomtefather Term. A few times it has been played with a pool of 3 or 5 maps, from which the teams have discarded 1(or 2) maps each for each match. I have enjoyed both ways, but selecting the 'wrong' map as map-of-the-year can have a negative effect on the amount of players interested.
The selection of map(s) + the amount of interest for the tournament usually defines the team size at a later point.
What is a good length per round? 20 min? 30? 40?

Duration
Usually Tomtefortress has been played either as a two day tournament with group stage on saturday and play-offs on sunday, or as a one day tournament. It could also be possible to play the games over a longer period, but I doubt it would be as much fun.

Last years site can be found here: http://www.elimi.jossain.com/tomte2008.htm
With the results on this page: http://www.elimi.jossain.com/schedule.htm
The expert analysis before last years tournament: http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=43920

The IRC-channel for the tournament is #tomtefortress on QuakeNet.

What have you enjoyed in the earlier Tomtefortress tournaments? What has been horrible? What could be improved on?
Tomtefortress needs your opinions!

It could be played early december or late november. I think a too long time between the announcement of the tournament, and the actual starting date may result in people forgeting and losing their interest.

As for the mix team suggestion, absolutely not. I don't think it's a drawback of any sort, when the teams consisting of the most experienced players play better than the newly started players.

Last years system of three maps was very nice. The lenght of a round should be determined by players on field. 6 vs 6 game definately 20min, while 8vs8 game could be 30min.

Sounds good to make the teams more equal, and it will make it more fun to less good players... since the problem evry year is to get alot off ppl
Ive talked to puh and i think we can get chosen's server up and running for tomte to. And let the dispenser pick the map =))

Site is up at http://www.elimi.jossain.com/tomte2009/

Whether we will be playing on one map only or with a pool of three (or five) maps is yet to be decided. Please suggest maps that you would like to see played.

We will have a three map pool: rs_zz1, well6, blitzkrieg2.
Both teams will discard one map, starting with the team noted in the schedule as the home team.

The remaining map will be played for 20 minutes.
In case of a tie, xpress3 will be played 4vs4, for a 'golden cap'. (the team that captures a flag first wins)

Well, since we are talking about maps, you wouldn't have that one used to play the 2006 finals do you?

I've checked the map pack you linked on the provided page and it is not there. I've also checked the 2006 page. Although there is a link to the map there, it is not working

I have never played teamfortress (or Tomtefortress?). I did play CTF for some time, but it was a long time ago. Would it be ok for me to participate in this as well? EQL div2 skill.

There are roles that a DM-player can fill without too much trouble. Maybe biggest learning curve comes with the hand grenades.
