That monitor should do 75hz at native 1280x1024 just fine in qw. If it doesn't work with just vid_displayfrequency 75, vid_restart... then you might not have the display mode enabled. For this you can get a small software like ReForce and simply set 75hz as default for native resolution.

I have the older version of that monitor with 3ms and works pretty nicely with cl_maxfps 154 with some added FSAA and FSAF.

ok i have done all i can.. it may be because of vista? ok, i have got the latest viewsonic vx922 drivers.. also go the latest vista drivers for my gcard (geforce 7950 gt).. and i still cannot change the refresh rates so they have an affect in qw. when i try reforce and refresh lock when checking the v. freq and h. freq it wont go above 75 67 respectively. i need some serious help getting out of this problem. ive read elsewhere that its vista and basically you cant do anything about it. it sais when i first load into qw that 'vid_mode will change upon restarting' if i do vid_restart it crashes qw and gives me the error: GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

i have no idea where to turn as forums dont seem to be able to provide an answer beyond reforce and refresh lock. which both dont seem to work on vista.. ive just tried direct refresh and that doesnt change my shit either. i ahve no idea what to do or how to setup my qw so it can run at 77 or 85 hz. if anyone can help would be much appreciated...

i installed rivatuner to add custom refresh rates.

The problem is that vista home premium doesnt allow me to use unsigned drivers. One sollution to this is to press f8 during startup

ok i have got the monitor to run 75hz. i guess i wont be able to do any higher. i guess my next question is do lcds do 100hz or higher.. if not, which im pretty sure they dont, how much of a difference is 75hz and if i do get a crt how much better is expected.. smoother or faster etc?

any discussion on crts and refresh rate would be great.. which old crt should i be looking for?

iiyama got a few crt models that can do 150-160hz in 1024*768.

150hz = 6.67ms between updates, compared to ~13ms on 75hz.

75 is pretty much the best value I found for my screen because it's so close to the server physics fps (77) and a close multiple of my cl_maxfps of 154. I could get it up to 85, but wasn't as good, 60 didn't feel that good either.

CRT is definitely clearly better at even 100hz, but once you get used to a decent tft you can certainly compete at the ~highest level of qw. Just ask all the div0 players with tft

Nah, skisso and mirage both bought CRTs back after realizing you just can't compete with tft.

Well I did too, but looking at your (imo) best player and one of the best players playing atm. tft is just fine. Talking about milton that is. And Lohjan Dag as well ofc

imo

tft sucks for quake. the majority of crt's which are > 17'' beats 99% of all lcd's in terms of smoothness

i play better with a crt + crap mouse than with a tft + elite hardware

/imo
never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

the monitor you should buy is a crt that supports 154hz at 640*480 at least. if u want to play with 154hz in 800*600 or 1024*768 you'll have to spend extra money. for the first, any 19'' monitor should do it, for the latter, the iyamas (or something) as willgurt mentioned are nicey-nice

myself i got a 19' sony E430. 154hz@640*480 or 144@800*600 - no more. but smooth as hell (even on a voodoo3 - literally ANY gfx > year 2000 card will do the trick)

Yea, but they both have a bit weak shaft if you compare to the crt players, me, ihminen, skisso. Of course you probably can play with tft but you'd just perform better with a crt. I have samsung syncmaster 959nf which unfortunately has started to show the early warning signs that it might not work for long anymore. I hope there's still quality crts available somewhere.
