You are missing some .pak file, probably pak1 like ruskie said above.

error msg in linux? im using vista atm. Ive downloaded pak1 and copied it to all important maps and still the error msg appears

Yeah basically I was just checking for the error msg and comparing it to misplaced or missing item (it's the same in windows as in linux with the exception of lower/upper case).

download defs quake then

install in a new directory and make sure you have id1/pak0.pak and id1/pak1.pak (pak1.pak isn't necessary to get rid of that message though).
