Well, there are way too many maps anyway, and (to be honest, sadly) most of them sux, have u actually played them, or specced? Every other map is "next_map"...

But indeed, its really nice to have a active ffa server, now we only need the funny maps You cant honestly think that maps like e2m2, e4m3, e1m2, base32b... are good ffa maps?

I've had my share of great fun on e2m2 (hold ra and run quad kk?), e4m3 (zomg quadfest anyone kkk?), e1m2 (hold ya and run quad) as well as on most episode maps where you need a cycle to do some pi pa pwnage. And yea, there are some custom maps i've put on because people requested them which I never played in FFA.

Flepser: There has been lots of autoaimers playing at xs4all servers, maybe you could start using player logs and banning the IP's they use?

hook is a cool map, check here for some quotes.

i see more and more players on the rookie server which is great. settings and selection of maps i like better on the rookie server and server #3, but everyone to his own taste i guess.

what i'm missing is a motd or some sort of welcome message that tells me what server i'm on (noobs/regular/pro/whatever). this would clear up things a bit and maybe even give players a bad conscience that come to the rookie server to get easy frags (you know who you are =) . last time i tested (ezquake 1.9 mac) there wasn't a motd,there used to be one i think but it stayed on the screen for a very short time and wasn't very informative.

another idea i had was some system that would allow to switch between the xs4all servers more easily. say i'm playing on the regular port and it's a crowded game of dm4 with many skilled players. if i notice some noobs in the crowd i would tell them about the rookie server and give them the ip. it's still asking a lot, especially from a rookie, to type /connect plus ip+port in the console.
maybe this could be helped with a server side alias - "alias gorookie! connect xs4all.nl:27501" something along those lines. and then display the alias in the motd so the noob knows what to do.

similar to the "next_map" command now that i think of it. that one's also not shown upon connect (?)or only very briefly...

I shall see what I can do about the the MOTD's on all three servers, I'm also thinking of tuning down the amount of maps on the main FFA, but because the rookie and 3rd server are having tuned down maps it might as well be sweet to keep it as it is.

Hook shall be added on the rookie server, or do you prefer it on the main one (or on both )

I'm pinging from Germany too. Yesterday my ping was roughly twice of what it normally is (~52) but today it was back to normal (26).

I still would welcome a feature very much that helps to instantly switch between the server ports from within the game (via a console command). especially if the MOTD is to be fixed because it would make a lot of sense to diapy that command in a welcome message.

just throwing it out there. what do other xs4all'ers think?

I don't know anything about that, perhaps XS4ALL changed some routing. Try to connect through a Belgian qizmo (if there is any). And how about quake.xs4all.nl:28000 qizmo?

How about e1m2ish/dm3ish? They are quality looking maps, and I really look forward to trying them out in FFA. Remove them the instant if it's clear they suck .

I'm going to whine about the age old problem: player limit. In most good maps the player limit is just too high. 10+ players in dm2, dm4, dm6, aerowalk and others just turns the game into a spawn competition.

Been thinking of changes XS4ALL into a small map max 10 man server, but decided against it as I'm not sure if that's the best for the server.

Flepser could u do a 2. server aka topsid dm6 fraglimit 50 and timelimit 20 and just dm6 ( topsid dm6 was the best ffa server in germany)

Aardappel made nice 'ish' maps that were inspired by original ID maps.

Imo, remove dm4 and replace with the 'ish' version:

why not make 2 servers √° 10-12 players. One with new custom maps, and one with dm2, dm4, dm6, aerowalk, ztndm3, for example. Keep up the good work fleps! We love you

I think you did rightfully so! We already had that "pro" FFA server on XS4ALL - or is it still there? Not very successful... :p

The splitting somewhat sucks too. Like you have three guys on one server and another four on the other one. And maybe you want to play the heterogeneous mappool with those guys, to see how they do on custom maps (custom custom as in kenya) and the usual stuff. To my mind even the sequence of maps should be mixed, i.e. DM2 is not followed by DM4, which comes some times later.

I agree that the maps can be too crowded but I prefer a too crowded map over two separate servers with three or four players playing.

right now it's more like 17 players on one server, not 3/4 or 7.
it just goes to show that there is demand for another one IMO.

and there is no need to to change the current xs4all at all. just make another port and make sure to *advertise* it properly, through a MOTD or here on the forum or on quakeservers.net. there would be a transition period needed to get it populated of course.
splitting sucks i agree and maybe the idea of introducing different ports with different skilllevel and mappool isn't a very good. so just open another port that's ffa with a nice mixed mappool and make sure people know it's there. this overcrowding just shows that there is demand.

Here's a suggestion:

- Two servers with some player limits and maps that match those limits.
- When the first server gets full players connecting to it get automatically redirected to the second server. This would require some mod changes from bigfoot.

right now (9.20 cet): "server is full" + 3 specs.
it's on dm6 now, that means a minute ago they were playing dm4 ffa with 18 players.
it's nice to know the server is popular but i wouldn't join there if there was a free slot. the situation could use improvement.

I find it interesting that Elvis FFA turns off quad when there are less then approx. 5 people in a map. It's also nice to have a countoff...

Anyway, I think the current mappool on xs4all is pretty good. There are new ones I still haven't learned yet, and some nice ones that are gone, but it's very decent.
