G'day

I'm planning a week long trip to finland for the end of October/early November. Current plans are to go to Helsinki and Turku, possibly flying into Sweden and catching a ferry (depends on flight deals). Any advice on things to see/do or better places to go within Finland would be appreciated. Also some sort of advice on how fucking cold it's going to be would be nice Likely to be travelling the week around the 28th Oct till early Nov.

Cheers

why not go to Poland? It's got more to offer, it's cheaper, and it's not as cold, sir!

Guess. Helsinki and turku temperature is 0-10ºC at that time.

If you are interested in war history there is Sveaborg / Suomenlinna in Helsinki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomenlinna
and in Turku http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turku_Castle and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turku_Cathedral

When there, i would recommend trying http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelian_pasties as it is always nice to try a local specialty.

With more modern stuff the Finns can prolly help you better.

Well, not really. Coldest time in Helsinki is Jan / Feb and if this winter is anything like the last x winters, there will barely be any snow until late December / early January (snow that stays for a while, not one day :p)

Thanks for all your input and suggestions on what to see

Going to finland cos my gf is half-finnish (though she doesn't speak it) and I've always wanted to go there

Seems like it'll be cold but not ridiculously so - still worth going.

A trip to tallinn is likely - though I've heard that the ferrys are full of drunk finns at 10am on the way there and full of even more drunk finns carrying ridiculous quantities of booze on the way back.

there is some stairway in helsinki on which lots of chinese people take photographs of each other, so you should head there if you like stairs. other than that i don't think there are anything really exquisite to see, though you might want to taste the karelian pies which are awesome

and btw, only half of the passangers are drunk at 10 am i think.. the other half are chicks
