forcing people to pay money to play qw would really destroy the scene

having a donate button with a money meter (like wikipedia) would make a lot more sense

Technical question: How much bandwidth does QuakeWorld use in MB/month in average? I'd guess not a whole lot from what I've heard but it still might sum up to alot.

We did some calculation, and it was about 135gb a month for 4 servers, with 10 ppl on the server for 12 hours a day. So 5/6 servers is doable with 175gb limit a month

thats why we kept 2 extra slots, 1 for eztv and 1 for a extra spec slot.

QTV is great to reduce bandwidth if you use the MVD-streaming capabilities.

I think its irrational to spend 1000+ euro.
plus, whats the point on having 20 ports on the same server? (ok i may be wrong here, but the fact is WE DONT KNOW if the servers will rule. also, as mur said, 90% of the time, 90% of the servers will be empty)

the reasonable choice if u ask me is the cheaper alternative. at least right now. If it has success we may discuss this again in 2009 and then choose the 1000+ euro choice, if needed and affordable.

everyone agrees that 1200€ is expensive and way harder to get than the 650€...
is murdocs math accurate? pretty lame if from day 25 of each month the server which "we" paid for is down

edit: is there a way to measure the server's current traffic? If possible, extreme measures could be taken if the traffic approaches the 175gb (like cutting 2/3 servers for some days. this way, at least 2 servers would be working until the end of the month. and day 1 everything's back to normal)
never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

I'd propose (like some others in here) a couple of months testing period for starters. Five servers (i.e. the cheap alternative) for six months or something to see if it works out or not. To throw 1200e at something we haven't even tried for real yet only sounds foolish.

Are you sure it's not possible to even try out their servers before buying anything (even if it says so on their website)?

theres also 1 month length period, so we can test the server during this ONE month. then decide what else. i'm fully in. can donate, say, 20E easly. more if needed (to gather 600E for one year period). 1 month costs only 50E. let's do it asap.

On what data was the calculation based on? Do you have any stats for bandwidth usage for a QW server?

Both players and spectators can take anything between 2500-28000 bytes per second if their rate allows this at 77fps (you CAN limit player/spectator rates from server). Also did you take downloading demos and/or maps into consideration? Of course if there is a Qizmo around that should be considered too as "normal client" when people are connected. EZTV saves bandwidth as it uses only ~3-4kB/s for streaming per client, which is about the same as normal client takes at it's lowest.

We checked SuomiCom's stats just today.

That contains all the traffic from players/spectators to voice and eztv. Note that the monthly figure is basically from almost empty servers during summertime and there is almost NEVER 4on4 games going on SuomiCom.

Hey guys,

The ping + donation list is starting to look quite decent.

There are already 20 people who have said that they are willing to donate €10~ / year for renting a server

^ And I know we are missing _a lot_ of ppl there that will donate if we get the donation done nicely and ppl can agree on the rented service.

There are however still some values missing and I would appreciate if you could make sure that both your latency values and donation status are marked correctly. If not, please correct / add your entry or if the wiki syntax seems too hard, post your info at the bottom of the page, by editing it.

Like I requested before, please don't post times here if you don't have some absolutely good reason to do so. It's a lot easier for me and Soma and other contributors to the table to keep track of entries here :/

Btw. I would also opt for the cheaper package first if the bandwidth is doable!

47 - WG latency (ms) to wargamez.dk / 83.136.89.122
63 - ES latency (ms) to easyspeedy.dk / 82.103.143.253
47 - GL latency (ms) to gamelaunch.dk / 83.221.145.105
In win2k console (not in qw).

P.S. Qizmos will help to reduse ping.
