Hi Trickle,

You should be able to remove the black see-through boxes by setting gl_alphafont 0 if you're using ezquake >version 1.8.

That charset was made pre ezQuake 1.8 and its gl_alphafont feature.
Back then I've added a black layer with low opacity over the entire charset to avoid some artifacts that could be seen sometimes in Fuhquake.

You could also try this version of the same charset where I've removed the "opacity" layer:
