I was thinking of an idea for a qw rookie league over the summer but with a bit of a twist.

The problem most new players have is adapting to the 4v4 format which is a huge step up from ffa etc.

With this in mind I was thinking it would be a good idea creating a rookie league but with each team having an established player within their squad.
This will basically enable the players to change from being complete newbies to actually knowing what to do within the 4v4 format.

This doesnt have to be a big league, what prompted me to make the post is that in the summer most clans take a break but there is still people on the servers
most evening for mixes etc.
For this to work we would need the commitment of a few of these established players willing to take the time to bring new players up a level or two.

Ake_vader had a team of newbies together for nqr and with his help they got alot better alot quicker.

Im not sure if there is the interest out there or even even enough new players to make it work but I thought Id mention it to see peoples thoughts.

and wouldnt you love to see a team managed by sassa own a team managed by para??

I dunno if this has been tried before either...

I think it'll be very difficult to gather enough rookies for a whole league.
But I hope it's possible to get enough rookies to fill at least two teams. Only one way to find out...

Having established players in the teams would suck unless such a player is either a) established, but not very much more. Like a player from ~div4-5 (who still knows the TDM mechanics) or b) fairly good players who really knows what they're doing - but supporting the team via Ventrilo/Teamspeak. I wanted to do the coach version with my friends' team in NQR that you mentioned, but lack of players and the fairly hard competition for a completely new team put them off unless i played. Sure we didn't win all games etc, but still. Would suck to have a newbie 4on4 league which would turn out to be a 1on1 between the good players. :\

Come to think about it, a tournament for newbies in any format is enough to make them happy and invite new players i reckon. I guess that's what Sassa wrote about though. He's yet to receive any feedback...

And btw, the main thing my team learnt from was probably the document on teamplay i wrote for them. It had both general stuff, but also map specific stuff like what to do on first spawns etc. I dunno how thorough the guide that comes with ezQuake is, but i think stuff to read about tactics etc is severely lacking for the beginners.

it could work both ways ie having the established player playing and giving the newbies the support and a chance to actually hold a map or having them on teamspeak while a game is running pointing out what they should be doing.

Stuff like looking for enemy rls and not running around after spawners etc, holding areas, timing quads etc etc so the simple things become second nature and from there they can work on their l33t skills.

the reason why I stuck at playing was there happened to be a revival in the irish qw scene but otherwise I would of given up as the learning curve is massive..

it doesnt have to be div0/1 players just anyone who is interested and feels they would be good at making a team understand how to win games....

what johnie says, about couching, on vent/ts, by 5th div0 player is great idea.

hereby I'm giving Murdoc full mental support for being one of the couchies

another idea for future EQL/NQR:

allow one, high div player, in each div5 (div6 if it happen) team, for counching and/or playing while that higher div player can still play for his regular team (say, div2/1). thus, each div5/6 team would have one very good player in their ranks. also we would have got rid of all the whine about low div clans having high div players under fake names.

i really would like a guide for 4vs4 to learn some basics, because without any knowledge of the 4vs4 gameplay one is somehow a bit scared to join a team :>

Due to the kindness of some (mainly Falzzi) I only understood 2on2 on DM2 and DM6. DM4 seems like a fragfest.
I wouldn't mind doing 4on4 but it'll need more co-ordination because it's more than 1 team mate on your side.

Coaching is a good idea, I've worked with it before and it really helps lower teams push up to be able to play. As for one of the people playing the game, not strong on the idea.

As a rookie count me in! (I need to idle IRC more)

It would probably be easier to just recreate PANGEA.
