how do you create ladders on maps (for example vdm3, head-shot)?
i'm assuming it's not just basic brushes as the rungs on these are too far apart and a bit of googling revealed that halflife/q2 use invisble brushes with special wall properties or something? any pointers would be grand, cheers!

I think that you create invisible solids that acts like a very very vertical stair basically, so you really create an invisible stair that has like a few pixels stepdifference in depth.

What molgrum said.

Q2 and halflife have dedicated entity brushes for ladder operation, whereas quake does not.

Create the visual ladder. Doesnt matter what it looks like.

Just in front of the ladder, create a set of stairs using the 'clip' texture, which turns the brushes invisible. Your movement is affected by them, but projectiles are not.

Figure out the max height that the quake guy can step up, and make each step this height. The stairs do not need to be very deep, maybe even 1u.
