I recently finished a Portable Quake Guide (for Windows users).

Overview:
Quote:
This guide is meant to provide an alternative for the bootable QWCD project (which is pretty much dead).
It contains instructions about installing a highly customizable operating system along with your Quake setup on a USB flash card/memory stick.

Advantages (besides portability):
- read/seek speeds are faster for USB flash cards than for CDROMs
- changes can be saved and files can be modified on a USB flash card
- the USB memory stick has a very small power consumption and it is ideal for use with laptops (instead of an internal hard disk), therefore extending battery life

head over to my column @ besmella to find out more.

please comment your suggestions, questions, corrections and whatnot about this relatively pointless guide

Why do you use WINE to run the Win32 binaries on a Linux system ?

well.. because Windows users won't have to download extra stuff that they don't know how to handle (like Linux binaries).. they just copy their normal quake setup on the USB stick

of course it's easier with Linux binaries, but the latest EZQuake version is using glibc 2.4 and SLAX has glibc 2.3
