i found something out for myself the days, what might be interesting for others using software qw.
don't know if it's been discussed in the past or if it's specific to my system, but here's the deal:

i started using sw qw some weeks ago, having my dsl connection dialed up by my computer (amd xp 2800 + 512 ddr@333 + 6mbit/608kbit).
i live in germany and had a ping of about 25 to splatterfest servers.
after sometime i wanted to configure my router to dial up itself on demand to the inet.
after doing that i suddenly had a ping of 13 to sf servers which was much more stable in addition.
it seems like sw qw does slow down the connection if its done by windows..
i verified that for myself and set my system back to do the connection, which had the result i had before.. not that stable ping of 25..

anyway, just might be interesing to others playing the same inet configuration i had and sw..

I think it's more to do with the quality of the router compared with the modem, rather than software QW having any influence on it. I know that with the old USB ADSL modems that UK ISPs used to give out, you would get a far less stable ping than with an ethernet ADSL modem or a router.

i had two test configurations, since i had to change my router:

first used a asus adsl modem/router all in one.
now i use a castlenet adsl bridge modem + netgear router all in chain.

had the same effects.. ping 13 on router dialing up, ping 25 on windows dialing up.

Try DOS pings with both settings - then you can see if the difference in pings is caused by the router or by QW.

okay okay...

made dos pings with same results on router dialing, as well as windows dialing .
i thought it must have been the software version, since most people i asked
about ping behaviour on system/router dial ups told me there is no difference..

u never stop learning

if your computer was going the dialling before then you would have most likely been using PPPoE. By having the router doing the connection you can set it to PPPoA which has less overheads than PPPoE so can cause you to get a slightly less ping as each packet is smaller from the less overheads.

not all routers support pppoa as far as i know. and the ones that have support are much more expencive that the regular ones with only ethernet support (pppoe).

My ISP won't let me connect via PPPoE :F When they sent me the connection info it said I had to set my router to connect via PPPoA or it wouldn't work.
