The FTE team proudly presents...
It was a long time ago since the last update on FTE, many may have wondered what has been going on in that time and I can only say that much work has been done for making the FTE-client a choice in competitive gaming: A ruleset has been introduced which will grant you to play with FTE in NQR!

This build labeled 3343 will feature the ability to watch games via QTV (supports both FTEQTV and EZTV)! QTV is without a doubt the future of spectating so supporting it is a natural step forward for any client nowadays.
All the older features which might have gotten unnoticed are of course still in: Minimized builds for fast FPS, mouse-driven menus/serverbrowser, customizable HUD, various eyecandy settings, NQ support, etc.

Noticable features in the 3343 release:

Client (full changelog):
* NQR ruleset, allowing custom models/sounds, use any models/sounds you want with this ruleset, really!
* Customizable particles, you can for example create your own rocket trails, blood and/or explosions!
* Custom textures, loads custom .pcx textures even in non-24bit mode, colorize the shaft beam and armors without 24-bit enabled!
* QTV streaming, watch QTV games with FTE!
* Aims for standardization, rather than being biased towards specific servers/mods, you can even play NQ mods!
* Optional minimized flavor, for those who want faster FPS and don't care about eyecandy!
* Teamoverlay support, for the rookies!
* Customization, huge amount of possibilities to customize and tweak the eyecandy! Click here for a good example!

* Heaps of bugfixes!

Server (full changelog):
* Anti-wallhack, destroys the benefits of wallhack, while saving bandwidth at the same time!
* QVM support, can play .qvm mods such as KTX! Also supports 64-bit systems!
* Player logging, keep track of cheaters/hackers/pestilences and ban them!

QTV Proxy (full changelog):
* Qizmostyle re-routing, you can use it to gain lower pings when playing games!
* Supports Fuhquake and mqwcl, watch QTV games with any client you want!
* Resource saving, servers no longer need spectator slots! QTV is smoother, takes less bandwidth and offers more potential!

The usual QCC compiler is also updated and you can read the full changelog to see what's new!

May sound like a weird question, but is there any documentation on what the 'anti-wallhack' actually does?
2008-02-15, 07:55
It makes the server only send users information about items/players based on if they're visible or not to that particular user.

To enable it, type:
sv_cullentities_trace "1"
sv_cullplayers_trace "1"

This is ridiculous, first they selected you, someone close to FTE development, someone blindly defending everything FTE-related, as the one who will decide what clients are allowed and disallowed. I was silent, I informed NQR that I'm disappointed with this step, but even though it was a very bad step, it was a step forward and I accepted it. I welcomed that a league became interested in non-mainstream clients.

And from your doubtful position you now tell us that you will not allow upcoming ezQuake 1.9 in NQR, meanwhile you are allowing new version of your own client.
Where are we?

For this NQR, 1.8.3 will be the only allowed version

Ok, seems like it was just a misunderstanding. NQR is not against allowing ezQuake 1.9 (when it's done). I am happy to hear that.

So uhm...did everyone agree on security modules and so on being useless, or are there such stuff for <whatever new ezQuake version> and <whatever FTE version> that will be/are allowed in NQR?
2008-02-15, 11:52
It will simply go through the same testing and discussion as any other client, for example FTE. We don't follow any specific agenda against/for particular clients except that they have to be adapted for competitive gaming, which I'm sure ezQuake won't have any problems with.
1.8.3 is allowed, while 1.8.2 is disallowed (because of a cheat-exploit found), that's the only reason.

to me it seems you are going directly from adding new features, to allow it in tournament play.

I think between releasing new features and allowing it nqr, there should be atleast a few official releases that only fixes bugs and doesn't take in new stuff.

Ake Vader:

NQR won't require security modules.

In the future, put links on the front page post as well
2008-02-15, 13:55
I understand that will stop wall-hacks, but wouldn't it cause some noticable issues on higher ping connections?

what an objective news article, 20 out of 23 sentences contain an exclamation point!

I wonder if Spike has fixed the Mac code? While it works it messes up the whole dekstop - similar as the Fuhquake Mac port. Ezquake seems to a better job here ;-)

Tuna:

Could you please join #fte @ Quakenet and explain the problem?

Mac OS X support is dropped because of instability and lack of testing. You can still get the unstable development binaries from: http://users.tpg.com.au/users/moodles/
Any kind of feedback/testing is appreciated, it is probable that a stable release for Mac OS X will be seen soon...

At last. I wanted to have those spike models that are visible through walls so I can go get my RA from hide@dm2 and I can spot other things easily too. Really.

I really hope someone revisits this custom models thing in the near future if it's really that way.

Why did I mention this with so much sarcasm? Because I've seen a player using such models that reveals if the dm2 hide-ra is there as it comes through the walls (spike-model). This kind of cheating should not be allowed, really.
2008-02-18, 00:40
The reason this is allowed in FTE is because it re-sizes the models to fit inside the same imaginary box as the original model. So if you insert such a spike, it will shrink down that model to the original RA-size.
I missed out on explaining this in the post, but there you got it, really.
2008-02-18, 00:50
How very exciting! really! I'll switch my clients asap! really!

So how about lg bolt model. Do you allow line-shaft?
2008-02-18, 02:20
Yeah, exciting...

No modified shaft is allowed, since the discussion still carries on on qw.nu / mailing-lists.
