What do you think of EZTV?
As the old ezQuake wiki poll had been there for what felt like half a year now, i decided to check up on what people currently think about another brother in the ez family - EZTV wiki!
As the hard work from Qqshka wiki finally starts to pay off in form of a fully working EZTV feature, i thought it's time to check up on what people think of it so far. Some of the players out there might not even have heard of EZTV despite my article where i tried to introduce it but i sure think it's time now anyway. With the new easyspeedy servers only having two spectator slots due to bandwidth limitations, i urge you all to try it out.

It really isn't any harder than browsing the EZTV site that lists servers that supports EZTV and the action going on at them. Just click "Watch now" and, if you have an ezQuake version that's recent enough, you will soon be watching the chosen game if you decide that ezQuake gets permission to open the file. It's just like watching an MVD demo with all the features it brings - with chat added.

So, vote in the poll on what the current state of your EZTV relationship is!

Well you should consider that so much of the action in qwscene was on wargamez and other servers that did not support ezTV. I checked the ezTV site a couple of times and never saw anything I would like to spec, that's kinda important

IF wg is replaced by es as the new hub of qw gaming, I would imagine using ezTV a lot more.

Yes, i know that and it's a bit of a shame that it has been that way really. Let's hope it changes though, so ezTV can be tested more frequently by a bigger load of users on a regular basis - and so that more people can enjoy the h!o!t games going on!

it's uber smoooooooth

über smooth yes! thanks qq QQ qqzzzz for all this hard work. And by the way, what'sap with upcoming chat features? that I would like.
2007-08-30, 22:19
Umm, chat already works with ezq 1.9 alpha.

One problem with ezTV is exactly the ez in it :/ If servers start to change to only a few spec spots, all those non-ezquake users will be fucked :/

Check my blog or the forum thread for updates. You can find newer clients, status updates and new features from both of them. At least if I remember to update them

ezTV ist sehr gut, jaja ganz schön und so weiter...

Well spoken niomic. I really don't like how fuhquake uses are more or less being actively forced to use ezquake. First it was the colouring of teamsays, which made it impossbile to read them. Now it's eztv which in itself is a great feature that has been needed for a long time. But is there no way to make it client-independent?

And to ezquake devs, please don't force people to use your client. You have added some nifty features, but I don't appreciate how they render other clients unplayable...
2007-08-31, 07:13
I agree with tgm, don't forget that there are still fuhquake users around... :S
2007-08-31, 07:16
Why not use ezQuake for spectating then on the few occasions (read: the big games) where it's necessary? Just associate the *.qtv files with your ezQuake.exe and you won't notice any difference really, as spectating probably isn't as performance critical (if that's the problem with ezQuake) as actually playing the game. You will probably go via the ezTV website when you choose game anyway. Just random thoughts.
2007-08-31, 08:38
tGM: if you approach qqshka the right way he could make it so that KTX de-colorizes colored messages for non-ezquake users
2007-08-31, 08:51
niomic, iirc the original FTETV/FTV that eztv is based on had a client proxy included, so you could use FTV without having a supported client, eg. the FTE client. You just started the client proxy, and made it connect to a FTV server, and then connected to the client from a qw client.

This might still work, if it ever did.

It would require updates to the clients to make it work. Although the idea of ezTV is to stream data that MVD consists of, it's not quite the same thing as playing an MVDemo from what i have understood. This and other things like chat requires updates to the clients.

Your best bet would be to somehow resurrect Fuh again. :\

Edit: or investigate things related to what Zalon wrote. I'm no expert so don't take for granted that i tell the truth on this client-independent-matter.

Niomic and tGM make a fair point. I myself am unable to use ezQuake because it uses far more resources than fuh and gives me unplayable fps. Now when spectating big games I'll be more than happy to use ezTV, especially as it streams the MVD - a total blessing! But what if I want to spec a mix 4on4/2on2 with the intention of waiting for a free slot in order to play myself? Wait until game is over, see if someone leaves, close ezQuake, open fuhQuake, connect to qizmo, connect to server, and hope nobody 'stole' my slot? And then of course if someone 'stole' my slot I have to close fuhQuake, open ezQuake, fire up ezTV and ask the person if i could perhaps get in. Kinda sucks.
On the other hand, I am of course aware of the fact that this isn't done to piss off non-ezQuake users, but to stick to the bandwidth restrictions. The colouring of team messages however: Totally unreasonable and outrageous. Thank you ezQuake for turning team messages into $§/($%§"RA"§$§200§"RA-NG!

In mix games, most team_says is spam of random characters anyways as people use different syntax. Impossible to read it by looking at patterns...

But there should be a few options on how to fix this incompatibility problem. Some which already mentioned here. Patch to fuhquake or mvdsv would prolly be the best.
2007-08-31, 11:46
Acknowledging it's twenty-first century and allowing the use of Q3-style team huds would be best.
2007-08-31, 11:49
agreed with tonik
hud+radar would be best

Even better if the dot on the radar and teamoverlay highlights when a teammate presses report.
2007-08-31, 11:55
Well ezQuake did not turn team messages into that incomprehensible gibberish and btw. I don't use FuhQuake. Still these are two quite pressing issues atm.

We are unable to switch to colored messaging in our clan because one of our players is still using Fuh and simply cannot get ezQuake to work right after numerous tries and even more ppl helping. This is quite a disadvantage especially if not using mm3.

The speccing-a-mix-game scenario that Soma brought up was quite important as well and if it can't be fixed, then spec slots should be kept pretty high. In addition to not being able to join the game directly if you are fuhhin', nobody can even see that you are speccing from the client list. And are you able to just "/join" from an ezTV session?

So to me it seems that ezTV is taking care of the problem that you can't get to spec interesting games, where you have no intention of playing yourself. But it needs quite some work to actually replace speccing in situation were specs are also in line to get in and play.

Big thanks to Spike for writing the most important base and biggest part of this application, his work will probably never be appreciated as much as it should.

I totally agree with the need of eztv, still I wont use it as for now, since ez 1.8 is buggy for me. But i got this idia after reading this thred: Why not put a qizmo-cam 24/7 on each "big" server. This why more ppl could spec the games without using eztv. This ofc would require someone to admin the qizmocams all the time, wich sux...

But then again... Im still waiting for a stand alone eztv client.

There is no way this is ever going to happen, it's just too problematic.

We are trying to introduce a revolutionary way of spectating games, and before we have even gotten started properly you would try to make people go away from EZTV.

Uh-huh, I don't know what to say.

these EZTV posts are getting annoying, like those about GPL maps too.. they're both around for quite some time, but no one seems to care :/ Ake Vader always tries to raise awareness, but nothing happens :<

EZTV ignorance is especially more annoying because people are stubborn to the point of nazism about their configs/clients. still have no idea how so many people are complaing that EZQ doesn't work very good for them. i switched a bunch of computers in the past 3 years (had both AMD / Intel + ATI / Nvidia) and had no major problems by using the latest EZQ version..

i'll be a nazi myself and i just hope the EZQ/MVDSV devs will alter the netcode soon so only EZQ will be allowed on MVDservers.. see you at the apocalypse ^_^

Just for the record: EZTV ROCKS!
Especially with the more recent ezquake featuring chat and everything. It's just great. I never had any problems using it.

24 Aquashark,

What do you mean nothing happens? In my first post I pointed out why eztv wasn't getting that much exposure, it was not available on the #1 hub for qw gaming and speccing: wargamez. It's still not available there and probably won't be for wg's existance. Whether or not the qw community actually supports easy.qw.dk to the point that it takes over as the new hub, then we have a different situation.

One thing you should also consider is the timespan we are talking about concerning qtv/eztv whatever. The idea / project has been around longer than a lot of players have even been in the scene. It's been coming and coming and coming, and a lot of times followers just kinda gave up - oh it's frozen _again_ Now it's finally starting to be here in reality and ppl just aren't _as excited_ as they were originally and it's not hard to imagine why.

With all these great things that have come semi recently: qrp project, mvd advanced demo / speccing capabilities, a good server browser, mouse controlled options menu, customizable hud etc. I'm really starting to feel that we are pretty close to everything I had hoped for. The only two things that I'm really still missing are wide eztv availability (and some added features) and removing the colored text divide between fuhq and ezq. Everything else is pretty much just details, little things.

Coming back to the original subject: Things are happening, people are trying out eztv and noticing some problems: lacking features in latest stable ezquake release (1.8 ), not being able to replicate some things they're used to as spectators (waiting in line for a mixgame), ezquake only.

And I must admit that it would help for my dreamstate to become reality, if all players simply switched to ezQuake. But I also sympathize with current fuhquake users. Fuhq prolly runs with less resources and if you're already hitting fps drops etc. with fuh, ezq will certainly not help. Having to configure things anew. Yes there are possibly many things that you would have to reconfigure and there are actually some graphics related commands that really fuck FPS up in ezquake with old configs brought from fuhquake. I haven't been able to pinpoint what these variables are, but have seen prolly half-a-dozen cases where ppl download nQuake, load up their old cfg and get like 60fps, if they go with the basic nQuake cfg, their at ~300

And simply, I just don't want to shut people out if we have a choice.

EZTV ftw, keep up the good work

Question is if people ever were excited.

Well I remember being really excited after having the experience of following q3 tournaments and hearing about qtv. That was some years ago >
