Yesterday I was thinking how cool it would be to be able to spectate QW games on a mobile device. Specifically, I was thinking of my iPhone, but I thought I would open this thread up to other devices.

I'm interested in hearing from the technical people what they think of this possibility and how feasible it would be currently.

I don't know much about this stuff but it occurs to me there could be two approaches:

Dedicated app which connects to QTV
Some form of proxy service which streams QTV broadcasts to mobile-friendly video

Any thoughts? This would be helluva cool.

Can you actually see anything on the screen?
Doesn't it get expensive? (or is it that common with flat rate mobile data packages these days? In ZA it's certainly not available )

QTV doesn't take that much bandwidth, but I do have a flatrate plan.

You need GLESQuake, then you set up a QTV (The FTE Branch) - It supports the NetQuake protocol.

It's possible to point the QTV to another QTV server or to a mvd, then just connect to the QTV with GLESQuake.

I was thinking about doing this as a service on qw.nu, but the steps to setting up GLESQuake and making binds for connecting to the QTV would be too hard for most users. And making a nQuake like package just for android might attract unwanted attention from Zenimax.

I want qtv for android!

and another thing, maybe a bit offtopic: Zalon, you sit on such a gold mine of qw related links. Where do you find out about all of this? And since its so "unavailable" I guess like 1% of the quakers know it even exists. Would be nice to gather them up somewhere. And even elevate such links to a higher level, instead of just update that "useful links" post in this forum.

You can get the "Quake Platinum" APK, it's the version that was removed from Android Market - It features a launcher that can download "mods", eg. Shareware, Full Quake, both Mission packs and a few SP mods.

Apart from the launcher, it also features a virtual keyboard, so you can write stuff in the console. No source code is available tho, it's still GLESQuake, just with a different java app around it - A quick google should do the trick for the APK tho.

There is Quake for iphone, using FTE QTV's NQ protocol should work for it as well, as long as the iphone version got network support

No idea, but GLESQuake is running in 800x480 - Lowering it helps a lot on the framerate
