Could be a routing issue if not all players are lagging. Try using a proxy e.g. quake.slackers.dk:30000

I'm not sure whether it's just me, although yesterday some locals seemed to be fine, pingwise. A few weeks ago I saw Boidii bragging about this lag stuff. He said things that implied that he was behind it, but ofcourse I don't know whether it was just bragging or that he really found a way to lag the server. At that moment there was also huge packet loss and when he started playing (when a map started that he liked) everything was back to normal. That PL seems to be OK now, but my ping is certainly higher then it used to be. I mean, I live in the Netherlands and I had ping 25 in the past. Now when I'm alone or with 2 ppl it's around 38 and on a crowded server it's above 50. That's just nuts.

It also doesn't make much sense to me to use a proxy through Denmark while I live in NL... unless I misunderstand this proxy stuff...

Depends, perhaps your tiny packets with Quake info in them has decided to start taking a hike in russia before going back to NL, then it might be better forcing them to go to Denmark instead.

Think the name is misleading. AFAIK the slackers.dk servers are actually located in NL?

the quake.slackers.dk servers/proxy are indeed in NL. Murdoc is renting them and paying for them, however not for long. He said smth about canceling the subscription as from April.

as for higher ping, which ISP You're having? any chance they have switched the Interleaving ON instead FAST ??

Interleaving would add about 14ms

well, that's almost exactly his difference. from 25 to 38, and then comes the floating to 50.
check Your rate (set to 20k) and perhaps FPS. in a massive FFA game Your ping will always jump, tho shouldn't be much more than 10ms (extreme cases).

I had the same problem just not long ago. when I was alone on the server I had i.e. 12ms on XS4all. playing any kind of game made my ping jump by 5-10ms, and in a massive 4on4 or FFA it could be up by 20-30ms. nuts. after many suggestions, I realized I had my rate equal 9000. set that up to 20000 and raised my fps from 231 to to 462 fixed it. 12-15ms (if there's nothing being leeched) and slight 5ms jump during massive FFAs at xs4all.

xs4all lags for me as well, but if I reroute I get 25 ms which is ok, but not as good as the 15-20 ms I had before

Well, I've contacted my ISP before about Interleaving, but I didn't get anywhere. Back then I complained about having ping 30 while people from UK had same ping as me, while the server is in my fucking country. And the UK ppl had DSL too, no fiber connection or anything special. This particular UK 'bloke' indeed mentioned the interleaving phenomenon.

Anyway, The ISP replied and I'm not sure whether Interleaving was on or off or fast or whatever, but their feedback basicly implied that I shouldn't whine about it because ping 30 was good according to them. But now it's 38 if I'm lucky...gets higher every fucking year

In the NL they are busy with fiber internet though... that should be fast. I'm not sure what the price is gonna be. I'm stuck with current ISP anyway for another year. Truth is that I don't game that much and surfing and downloading is pretty good for a DSL connection.
