Hi there, i was curious if anyone knows why i have such trouble with EzQuake dropping to a real low frame rate. I can be playing and what not and be getting over 1,000 fps, then during certain scenes which aren't really that taxing, it'll drop down to below 40 and get real choppy. It usually does this if a shambler is on the screen and shooting lightning beams at me, or if im in a situation with an excessive amount of grenades. (I play mostly TeamFortress) I know it shouldn't be acting this way, friends Ive talked too say theirs never does that, and i had been using fuhquake up until i switched over to EzQuake to try it out, i never really drop below 120fps in fuhquake. Is my system just not man enough to handle EzQuake? Is it multi threaded for quad core cpus or SLI video setups? I don't run AA or AF in my nVidia control panel, my system stats are in my signature.

I'll post my EzQuake Config file just in case its something im doing wrong in my config file, Ive tried a lot of messing around with it to no avail, which saddens me cause I like EzQuake (never tried nQuake). Ive tried the 1.9.3 ver of EzQuake & I've tried http://uttergrottan.localghost.net/ezquake/dev/nightlybuilds/win32/2009-09-03-r4212-ezquake.7z which im currently using, no difference in performance was noticed though. I've been screwing around with independent physics and what not to see if that would clear it up, but alas to no avail.

Do you cap your FPS rate? I hope you do otherwise you will get a lot of FPS spikes.

I have a fast system and I turn everything up to max, but you still have to cap your frames per second. My monitors refresh rate is 60, so I caped the FPS at 260. You don't need your FPS up to 1,000. That is just useless.

You wouldn't happen to have an ATI card by any chance? ATI drivers past version 6.12 have terrible performance with dynamic lighting in quakeworld.

Try setting r_dynamic to 0 and see if that clears up the problem. If it does, then you can choose to either roll back to old drivers or continue playing without dynamic lighting.

I got an nVidia GTS 250 card, i have recently tried capping my fps with cl_maxfps 400, cl_independphysics 0, and cl_physfps 77 but no luck.

I'm using a LCD monitor via DVI and i dont think i can set it any higher then 60hz

I did a fresh install of EzQuake to its own seperate folder all stock settings, and tried to lower the resolution down from 1280x1024 to 640x480 and set my texture mode to gl_nearest but the fps still can some times drop so low it chops. Not running but a few back ground processes, i thought maybe it was my overclock on my cpu, so i set it back to its stock setting of 2.53ghz, but that still had no effect. I've done full testing of my memory since i read on the forum that could be an issue, but memtest86 indicated no errors after it was done.

Hmm that is odd. Your video card is double the strength of mine and I run everything at max 1680 x 1050 and I have no problems.

If you have NVIDIA drivers 185.xx or even newer ones, you need to make a profile for ezquake-gl.exe and set multithreaded optimization to off. Or you could do that using global profile. Or you could go back to 182.50 WHQL drivers which seem to be the best at the moment, especially when considering that you have "only" GTS250 card installed.

I did do the profile for turning off threaded optimization, didnt notice any difference though, my fps still plummets, i gave sys_yeildcpu 1 a go and i didnt notice any difference with that on or off either.

I'm using nVidia drivers 190.62

I don't even see that in my Nvidia control panel (version 190.38drivers on Win7 RTM). I don't have any issues but just sayin...

I don't even see that, also don't see in latest drivers I just installed a few minutes ago. Now running 190.62. I guess since I have a Pentium D and not a core2duo?

No.
I have a dual core Pentium D, the era right before the core2duo. As I recall Darin has a Quadcore2duo and he said he didn't have the setting either?

problems with nailgrens could be cpu related, too? not sure at all but isn't it that nails are very cpu-demanding? i remember somebody, maybe even Renzo writing about nails and serverload (nailhack..?).
