Hi,

Is there a tutorial out there that shows you how to do these things? I've watched demos and spec'd a lot of players. It looks impressive but I don't really understand how it all works or what keys they're pressing to do it.

Hi Ocelot.
Reading this might help: http://wiki.qwdrama.com/Bunnyhop
Although I must say, I find the easiest way to learn bunny hopping is with someone explaining it to you on a server while speccing you. If you feel you need someone to show you the ropes, msg me on IRC and I'll gladly look over your shoulder a little. -> [Soma] on QuakeNet.

Show keys in ezQuake and you can see what keys the player is pressing (doesn't work with mvd).

or just walk forward, then push strafe and jump (remember not to let forward button go!) and when youve learnt that you can bunnyhop by accelerating with the same manouver and then letting forward key go and by timing jumping. no need for tutors or fancy quakewiki-pages

oh wait, do you let forward go in strafe jump? im not sure

Hi Ocelot,

Check out the movement guide here: http://dmq.geeky.cc/Players.aspx#MovementGuide (its for DMQ, but it is pretty much the same as QW). The videos have an overlay showing which buttons are being pressed.

You can do both. If you keep +forward down and turn the mouse you will kind of like Curl around, like if the crosshair is the centerpoint and you spin around it (bad explanation).

If you don't hold down +forward you will just jump in the direction you point at.

There are also straferun tutorials for Warsow on Youtube, which is similar to quake. Keep in mind that you especially gain speed if you keep turning the mouse, but not too much. You have to find the right angle at different speeds and the right mouse turning speed. Not too slow, not too fast.

Holding the forward button is ok depending on the situation. When you run around a corner or if you want to look besides you while running, it's handy to hold the forward button, but not if you run straight forward when not wanting to look besides you.

Try to feel the difference of holding or releasing the forward key in combination with a strafe key. The easiest way to do this is to find a level with a pillar, like e1m2 quad or grenadelauncher rooms. So if you're standing at the right side of the pillar, press jump + left strafe key and move mouse to the left as well and you'll go faster and faster around the pillar. Now do the same without the forard key and notice the difference.'

Also: the above method is a simple way to gain some speed from standing position. Just do the above again in an open area: press jump + left strafe key and move mouse to the left as well, and now on the next jump, release the forward key and gradually move the mouse to the right. Notice the speed gain. Play around with that stuff and you'll start to get a feel for it.

Perhaps it's easier in an open level, like povdmm4.

It's horrible to explain in words, but by spectating demos of some decent players in slowmotion and realtime motion, you'll figure it out. But the timing of releasing or pressing the forward key is crucial.

I did a bunnyjumping tutorial, it's on the video site. You can find it here: http://videos.quakeworld.nu/video/guide-bunnyjumping/

Hi Everybody, somebody help me the right direction about this jumps?

I read this guide: http://www.ezquake.com/docs/manual/jumping.html but I don't understand when press a key and when release.
example about this first basic jump: http://www.ezquake.com/docs/manual/demos/strafe-2.mvd
I just try to press forward when I run and then press 'A' (left moving) at the same time, and moving the mouse to left and then press jump key. That is the good steps?
should the forward button be pressed all the way to the jump or should it be released before the jump?
I just watched a lot of tutorial videos and try to jumping (without forward key press) but I don't understand exactly when press and when release a key for this jumps.
i watched a couple of tutorials where the keystrokes are visible but it happens so fast i can't keep track of when to do what. turn, strafel, go forward, jump ....
i tried to play the mvd in slow motion but i can't see the keystrokes so i can only guess what key to press ...
The basic question is whether run always is on, because many turotials have been told not to have + speed released on the console instead. Is that right? The other issue is that the forward button should be kept pressed during the process if I understand previous posts well.

is there a jump where the keys are visible or could it be turned on it in mvd demos? (I was able to slow this down well enough to be able to observe what was happening ...)

I'm only interested in dm3 jumps mainly because I mainly play against frog bots on this map.

i want to practice the jumps but i don't know exactly what to do to do it right

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

easiest in my opinion is to not make it too complicated. You can do every jump in the game without even pressing +forward once. Whenever you turn left, press +moveleft, and every time you turn right, press +moveright. Then jump around and try to get a feeling for the momentum, and you'll never have to press +forward again when bunny hopping. Of course, sometimes it's beneficial to press +forward to maintain bunny hopping while also aiming, but that is advanced.

Check demos at https://badplace.eu, see what other players do.

If you need more advice, most are happy to help over at the QuakeWorld discord - http://discord.quake.world

Good luck,
Andeh

Also, for `/show keys` to show you what keys are pressed, you need to watch a .qwd demo which was recorded locally, not a .mvd demo recorded from the server. nQuake comes with a bunch of sample qwd demos showing many of the jumps on dm3. You can also slow down the demo playback to make it easier to see the keys being pressed and released.
