I remember the days of Super Janet and they guys with 15 ping playing, they used to always win and be classed as the best players, but in reality it was all in the ping

It seems that because of the nature of quake this still remains the same.

A 50 ping vs a 25 ping has a distinct disadvantage IMO, I just wondered what your thoughts were as I consistently see the low pingers dominating FFA with 50+ frags over the second players

up to 42 ping there's no enormous difference, imo, but over 42 ping and you start to feel a difference.

people can still get used to playing with a certain ping though, but since ping is a limiting factor, of course it makes you "worse" than a player with lower ping and equal skills.

Better ping is better, it's as simple as that. And there is already a big difference between 13 and 42 too, especially with the shaft.

Well it's definitely true that you can adjust and possibly perform just as well with 50 ms as somebody with 25 ms on the same skill level. From 1997 til ~2000 I had 13 ms 10 mbit sunet connection and had 13 ms in all of Scandinavia, at the end of 2000 I lost that connection and played from home with 70 ms shitty isdn, took me like 2 months to get fully used to it but I can swear I played just as well, if not even better (developed new tactics cuz high ping doesn't allow much offensive play), than I did before on 13 ms, but obviously the possibilities on a low ping connection are better and it's a lot more fun playing. And the level of play is a lot higher atm with a lot of flood tactics so I guess it just adds to the difficulty of being a high pinger.

Yea I dunno I disagree. Under 100,120 or so still allows a win to be possible.

Its less pleasant, but even at 200ping I still find a win possible(but i guess i am mostly referring to the more balanced quake 3 in that respect). I guess what I am trying to say is, if you are the most skilled player on the server, a win is likely regardless of ping.

In a duel situation ping matters a bit more, but still to me 13 vs 42 ping = petty excuse for losing.

While technically speaking a lower ping is better, I know from experience that playing with a 20ping while being used to a 150ping is not exactly 'better'

Help me understand the little that I know.

The higher level (of skill) you're at, the bigger difference the ping makes imo.

Not really. I think I played pov once with dragon on a server with those pings and of course won each time. Then we went on another server with pings reversed and he won or at least it was much more even. If ping had no effect, then it shouldn't have mattered which server we were using, but it clearly did.

Admittedly in FFA ping matters the least, because you can try to just camp for easy frags, but if there's equally skilled player with lower ping, chances are he will win instead.

playing with good players and low ping is important. This way when u switch to higher ping u know exactly what to do dispiste the player being apparently slower and clumbsier.

If you have the opportunity to play with low ping vs good players you will evolve more rapidely. If u have high ping (>60ms) all the time, the process will be much slower.
never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

Make sence.. well not that im that good of a player, but i suck big time more with 38ms then 25, and even more
with 52ms then 25, it's a BIG diffrent to me.. maybe that's because i have such an agressive playstyle throwing rocket's
and gl's like an ass, and with that ping the things i do during games doesn't work, and takes a lot of time to addapt to.
Or it's just a psychical thing... "38ms" ..

The lag number explains itself pretty clear

If you have ping 30, when you press the button for shooting a rocket, the packet warning you pressed the button is going to take X ms to reach the server, which is the same thing as it will take X ms to be shoot

If you have ping 100, its going to take X+N ms, N ms more than with ping 30

Ping is the roundtrip time (time to reach the server and come back for you), if we consider ping as 50% up 50% down, which is not always correctly but for explaining purposes i will use so, a 100ping will have to wait 50 ms to his rocket be launched after he send the +ATTACK, while a ping 30 would have to wait merely 15ms. If you do the simple calculation, the lower ping player has a advantage of 35ms.

Things get even worse for shaft, where every little mouse movement needs to be updated
For every little movement of mouse, you need to send packets, to have your shaft correctly syncronizhed with the server. As you can see, its pretty obvious that lower pings will have a great shaft advantage over higher pings

In a such fast-paced game like QuakeWorld, where quick reflexs and mouse movements plays a big role, every ms is important, and can play a major role in the player performance
