a question for graphics gurus- will I benefit much from down scaling the numbers in photoshop for use at high con res (800x600)? How does quake scale them?

Which video res do you have with that con res and which numbers do you want to scale/use?

vid 1024 768, con 800x600. I've scaled anum_*, num_* to 1/4 (48x48), and sb_cells,shells,rock,nails to 1/4 (64x64) and they look better. But this is with no knowledge of photoshop or the way quake handles images, what is the math with converting images? also what vid res/con res are they designed for?

Infinite gratitude }B) your images are brilliant as always.

I think it's always best to try to have the relationship between your vid res and con res in whole numbers so to speak.
For example vid res 1280x1024 should have con res 640x512 (vid res divided by 2) or 320x256 (vid res divided by 4).

In your case the best con res for 1024x768 would be 512x384 but I guess you've already tried and rejected that?
You could try con res 768x576 and see if that'll look better than 800x600, which I think it should cause it's 0.75 of your vid res.

When you use the same con and vid res the numbers take up 24x24 pixels on screen.
If you have con res half the vid res it take up 48x48 pixels and so on.

If you now have numbers that are 96x96 pixels they will be downscaled to half its size if you have a con res half the vid res.

Hope this makes sense

Makes perfect sense Thanks man!
O lo, here I was thinking con res was constrained to video resolutions, 768/576 is great, not too much for a compromise. Were you able to use -conwidth/height parameters in fuhquake like this? (just imagine all those years in the dark ages : )

just to clarify those hud-numbers being 192^2 and conres=vidres makes them 24^2, thats a general rule that things will be 1/8? and 1/4 at conres/2=vidres, so 3*conres/4=vidres (768x576) means things will be 1/6 (32p)?

There are no rules regarding replacement textures resolutions, it's all up to the author.

I confess that I'm responsible of some 192x192 numbers They're way too big really cause they need a ratio of 8! between vidres and conres to be displayed in all its glory on screen.

And yes, for your 0.75 ratio the numbers will be displayed as 24/0.75=>32x32 pixels.

edit:question deleted :}

Also when scaling images down in photoshop should I use the 'bicubic' algorithm or is there a better choice?

Sorry, not sure which algorithm is best for this really. I usually go with 'bicubic' or 'nearest neighbour' though.

Is there a way I can use the ammo icons (ibar) in this set without the background? I like the simple ammo icons with a transparent background.
