I'm using 100/10mbit connection and I'm wondering how many connections it can handle before it starts lagging.
I guess it depends on what "rate" i use at the servers, but if i go with default rate...

My guesstimation is like 100 users. 1000 Kbyte upload / 10 Kbyte rate = 100?

I'm not sure though, hehe.

Hmmmm

10Mbit = 10,000,000 bits = 10,000,000 / 8 Bytes = 1,250,000 Bytes

Your upload / users rate = 1,250,000 / 10,000 = 125 users.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, someone.

So rate 10k means 10kb/s duplex? I thought it was 10kb/s combined.

here is the math, but remember, this is just theory

(I have roughly that on my BBB 100/10)
then your server can handle 1152*1000/8/8000=18 clients
that is 8 players and 10 spectators, if you put maxrate to 8000.

If what goqsane says is true a 10mbit line can handle around 200 clients. Ie more than the playing population currently..

Term, 10mbit=/=1000kbit.

BBB 100/10 ? 100mbit/10mbit? Or that some price?

"BBB 100/10" is 100Mbit down and 10Mbit up yes, full duplex ofc, I don't see how you can have half duplex and "100/10". In reallity I download stuffs in ~5MB/s and upload in ~1.4 MB/s (that is from ftp.se.kernel.org, I just tested).

Error: seems I mixed up bits and bytes yes, tnx, it should be 18*8 = 144 clients

thanks. seems like i have ping issues for my servers anyways. My server is a 2.53GHZ with 2GHZ 400Mhz DDR RAM. So i could set up some servers if someone is intrerested. But... Seems like the ping isnt good enough? mustalainen.se:27500

25ms + some pl spikes from Finland. I'd suggest that you'll switch to KTX and the latest MVDSV. Those won't help with the occasional lag though

QW clients at 77fps can consume anything between 5kB/s - 27kB/s of bandwidth depending on the situation (and if the client's rate allows this).

The max QW client download rate was tested with qizmo/netmon when more than one people were shooting with nailgun in amphi/dm2 corridors so that the maximum amount of data was sent (it was about 27000cps (or byter per second)).

You seem to have 10Mbps upload which is a bit more than 1100kB/s transfer rate. A quick division gives me the result of ~41 at the max throughput (41*27kB/s=1107kB/s) which is almost all of your connection's upload bandwidth consumed.

As I said, this is the situation when all the clients are having massive transfer rate from server to client and will probably happen very seldom (dm3 4on4 pent fights for example). I don't know the point where your connection begins to gain lag when sending data, is it 50% of the max upload or is it 75% or whatever is it. I guess your server(s) won't suffer from lag if there are 20 to 30 people playing with /rate 50000.
