A couple more one-map tournaments in the next few weeks, starting off with one of foogs's maps, shifter.

The tournament structure will be small double-elimination brackets, and will start an hour later than recent Sunday events - hopefully this gives more people a chance to enter. Expect the games to be complete by 11:30 CEST. I'll do my best to split people into divisions to try and make sure the games are close.

People & clans

It's rare for a clan to still be active after such a long time. Here kip reminiscences over the 20 year history of one of Finland's oldest quake clans...

Back in the day here in Finland, we had a portal just like called iNET Dome. There was QW related news in general, clan-news, player-news, announcements about player transfers and most likely everything you needed to know about what's happening in the Finnish scene, and elsewhere in Northern Europe.

Dome had fragrank which kept statistics for their two main servers: iNET Small and iNET Large. Small ran DM1-DM6 and Large was for "big boys", a lot of action only on DEATH32C.

Dome's Fragrank was the first time I discovered two names but one prefix. Timi and Scopa. Timi was leading the rank with over 100k frags, and Scopa wasn't that far behind. One thing that was amazing, they both played under "FU"-tag. I did a small amount of research and quickly noticed that FU stood for Fraggers United.

Today i have made some changes to the nQuake configs in order to try to iron out some usability issues. The issues were mainly configs getting overridden, values not set properly, HUD visibility and also some resolution compatibility issues for us poor people who play on a laptop in 1024x768 for fps purposes.

Since the weekend, several questions have been asked.

Can carapace make it three wins in a row?
Or will speedball turn up to ruin his party?
Are any russians ever going to enter?
Did marriage strip lordlame of all his power?

(That last one was me, after playing him on Monday). All these and more will be answered this Sunday at 20:00 CEST (19:00 BST, 18:00 UTC) when we meet up one more time for Eclipse Cup #5. Sticking all with same rules as #4, so map-pool is still TB5 + bravado & skull.

The one thing I'd like to improve is starting on time, which has slowly been getting worse each week. I will try and contact people around 19:30 and will start removing people I can't find around 19:50. It's important to start on time, and while it's fine to just turn up and play at 20:00, I need to have the groups ready which takes about 10 minutes. Even if you shout "yeah I'm definitely playing, I'll be there", that's sufficient. So either be able to reply on discord or be on a quake server before 20:00 please.

Update: Tournament is over, thanks to everyone for playing.

There will be a break in the Eclipse cups for a couple of weeks now, while we assess better ways to boost scene activity.

Last week carapace shook off the rust to defeat bps 2-1 in the final to clinch the title. This week we have an expanded map-pool, with dm6 & skull available for selection (ping rules etc the same as previous tournaments).

Tournament starts at 20:00 CEST (19:00 BST, 18:00 UTC) and will run for approx 4 hours. Exact structure may change due to numbers but expect a group stage and then knockout bracket to determine the winner.

Signup in the comments below, remembering to list your two map-drop nominations in order (first one will always be dropped, the second is a backup option).

EDIT: Tournament is now over, thanks again to everyone for taking part. After an awkward start we finally got going and after the group stage carapace met nigve in the final.

Full results available on the wiki page.
Demos are on badplace.

After a break to test out q1q3monsoon test, it's back to normal this week. Same rules as Eclipse #2,
where lordlame edged out nigve in the final, after an evening of surprises.

This will be the last Sunday tournament without DM6, see forum post for ideas on future map-pool.

Update: Tournament is over, many thanks to everyone who played. Congratulations to the winner, no spoilers but full results are available on the wiki here. The finals & some choice games from the group stages are on YouTube here.

To allow lordlame to say he was reigning champion for two weeks instead of one, the format completely changes this Sunday and instead we test a potential new map for Thunderdome 9.

Q1Q3Monsoon was created by Mick as part of ProjectQ1Q3. Some playtesting has led to an alternative version that is a candidate for inclusion in Thunderdome 9's mappool. Thunderdome 9 starts in October, so this tournament is a chance to try it out and get feedback.

Edit: Tournament is over, congratulations to speedball & ric for winning divisions 1 & 2 respectively. Whether you had a chance to play on Sunday or not, please leave any feedback on the map in this forum post.

After nitemare's victory last week, round 2 is this Sunday night @ 8pm CEST (7pm BST).

Same rules/structure/map-dropping rules as last week, so it should be a round-robin group stage, followed by a double-elimination bracket to determine the winner.

Update: Tournament is over, thanks to everyone who took part and also to Jehar for streaming at TastyspleenTV. The full results are now available on the wiki page.

This coming Sunday (17th) there will be a one-map tournament for a new map that is being considered for Thunderdome9 - stay tuned for details.

John Romero has posted a blog update on the origin of the multiplayer-only maps present in Quake, i.e. the DM series. It's an interesting read that, among other things, reveals that DM3 was originally called JRBASE3 and also includes an early overview pencil sketch of the most popular 4on4 map of all time dated all the way back to 9th Jan 1996.

The QuakeCon 2017 event started yesterday with the first rounds in various tournaments. QuakeWorld is, at the time of writing, yet to see any action with the games kicking off tomorrow (Saturday). The QuakeWorld tournament will have some international presence in Locktar, Rio, Feffe and Dirtbox who will challenge the locals Rix and Thump4 among others. In this post we'll collect various links and other information that's good to know.

Event is over, congratulations to the Champion! See full post for final standings.
