dK: CHTV may be a waste of time
Welcome to the second part of Zappater's huge interview with DonKing. Today we talk about the current situation of Challenge-TV, the problems its facing but also the support its given by the community.

If you missed the first part of the interview it can be found here.
How do you think Challenge-TV is faring today?

CHTV is doing horribly. In the last week there has been a total of ZERO demos uploaded. This is the biggest reason I am trying to revamp the site. It may even be a waste of time. With Youtube and other sites like it it seems that everyone just wants the simplicity of hitting the play button and watching a match.

I think demos are now for the die hard fans. Someone needs to create a demo player that plays all of these games without needing that game installed.

Yea I am asking cause of the recent post about CH-TV's possible death, can you tell us about the events if any that led up to this?

Just that. No one adding demos to the site. People download demos but CHTV will never grow if all we do is download.

About that, how many downloads a month does CHTV actually have?

I do not know. The backend of CHTV is older than I am. One of the things I want coded in is the ability to get all of these stats. How many downloads per day, per month and so on. I have a lot of ideas.

Also some have attributed the small amount of uploads to it being summer, whats your opinion about this?

That is ridiculous. Simple, the problem is people do not want to upload demos, I don't know why.

In the thread a minor flame-war between you and Phil almost started, can you tell us more about this situation and why Phil isn't working on the site currently?

Phil helped out a lot with CHTV, most of the current code was created by him but he did not finish, no one ever does. Phil blames me for not forcing him to finish. Phil is a grown man and he is volunteering his time and expertise and I never wanted to be pushy and or bossy.

We will talk more about your vision for Challenge-TV later but for now, could you just share some of your ideas for CHTV?

A total redesign, I want to add archives, ie. the old Challenge sites. I want stats as I mentioned earlier, I want every person to have a profile that shows how many demos they have uploaded and perhaps downloaded. A news section that allows trusted users to add news (I am not too concerned with news, CHTV is a demo site but I do want a small amount of news). I want to run tournaments through CHTV, I also want a video section and many many more!

You recently offered a DVD pack in exchange for donations, how has that worked out?

There have been a few donations and I am pleased with the people that have donated. They are appreciated.

You claim that the DVDs contain over 20 000 demos. Is that individual demos or demo packs?

The demo packs are counted as 1 demo.

So the actual amount of demos are closer to 60-70 000?

That is possible but I do not think it is that much.

What will the money go to?

To a designer and a coder. I have someone working on the design and that is not going well, it is a very slow process. The code is going very slow as well. I need someone that can do both for a very very very very cheap price, free would be nice.. then the money can be put into a tournament!

Last thing on the topic of the present, who is the sponsor of CHTV?

A fan of CHTV answered the call when I needed help. A guy by the name of Mescon who lives in Sweden is hosting CHTV and Promode.org. He is a very kind guy and is appreciated.

You heard him, start uploading more demos and while you are at it why not donate $25 for your own QuakeWorld demo collection.

Also make sure to check out the first and last part of the interview in which we talk about the creation of Challenge-TV and its future respectively.

I think one problem could be that some people think its not polite to upload demos yourself when you win a duel or something. And the other guy will allways go
"why do you upload this?? this wasnt a good game not worth the download.. blabla"
I think it should be changed, if you win something just fucking upload it!
And if there was other maps where the other guy won you could just mention that in comments or something.

The new features planned sounds really good dK, hope this will all be done! Otherwise I think you seem to have a rather negative view on things. Get your shit together and start thinking more positively, otherwise I doubt much will happen with CH-TV in the future

About summer break:
"That is ridiculous. Simple, the problem is people do not want to upload demos, I don't know why."

It's not ridiculous. A huge part of the scene goes on break during the summer. The ones that are playing are often not doing it as actively, and hence they don't play at their usual skill level. Because of this we don't get those top notch games as we do during the season, and therefore I don't think the players finds the games good enough to upload to CH-TV. You talked about quality of demos before and how the quality went down after everyone got to upload demos of their own. So, considering the circumstances, would you then like people to upload "crappy summer demos" just so there would be any demos uploaded at all?

Another aspect is of course that there are no tournaments during the summer. Most of the demos uploaded on CH-TV is from tournaments, simply because the tournaments do provide us with the best and most entertaining games. Without tournaments there will never be as many demos, no matter how much games people will play. The season will start soon again and I think we will get to see a lot of demos as soon as the tournaments starts, and not only demos from tournaments, but also more demos from prac games etc as soon as people starts getting back into shape.

I have big hopes for CH-TV and for you dK, don't give up

it's not that people don't want to upload demos, they just don't want to upload demos of close to meaningless games that are going on right now ;p

Seems like we for once agree on something fern. Amazing, never thought this day would become reality!
2010-08-14, 21:04
summer is peacetime ;p

There is a 4on4 ladder going on though, just sign up and play

Saying that it's isn't the summerbreak's fault is just being ignorant - I normally upload a ton of league demos, and I haven't uploaded anything for the past 2-3 months...

Also, ever since DonKing moved the site and removed Phil's access, the upload sizelimit have been set to like 2MB, so uploading demopacks have been impossible.

How about creating a small app, or like a context menu choice, that allows you to just rightclick a demo, choose "Upload to CHTV" which will open up a small box where you fill in some info about the demo and then hit Upload.

Now that would imo considerably increase the amounts of demos uploaded. People are and will always be lazy.

Zalon: Wow, didn't even know that.. hope that will be fixed, because I'm sure ppl won't be very keen on uploading demos one by one, considering how long that would actually take!

Fog: Good idea! The easier it gets, the more demo we will get

"Also some have attributed the small amount of uploads to it being summer, whats your opinion about this?

That is ridiculous. Simple, the problem is people do not want to upload demos, I don't know why."

I always uploaded our league games. Now it summer, there is no league, I am not in Finland nor playing Quake, so ofc I am not uploading any demos. I am sure that applies to most people.
