4on4 maps in development
17 Feb 2010 @ 00:04 by dk Zalon
While new maps made with QuakeWorld TDM in mind is a rare thing, it's even more rare to see two active projects going at it, at the same time. But never the less that is what is happening right now.

Those of you who have been following the forum or the .qw messages the past few days, might have noticed two maps being advertised for mix-testing. To make it easier for everyone to get in on the fun, we've gathered some info about the two in-development maps.

Read on for screenshots, downloads and more information about the maps.

Cargo bay 12 (bay12beta) - by bps and pluppifjellen

One of the projects is headed by bps, he has together with his countryman pluppifjellen been working on a new 4on4 map called Cargo bay 12. The map has been in the works for over half a year, and have been in a "closed beta" for the past couple of months, it is now being tested during the late evening and night-mixes.

Lava Station (q1anni-beta2) - by anni

The second map is based on the Quake III Arena map Grim Dungeons while in anni's remake it goes by the code name Lava Station. This project is fairly new, and is anni's first effort in map making.

iam very curios about both projects. Played a few mixes on both and I really like it. Needs a few improvements nevertheless.

fantastic!

imo bay12 has a lot of potential.

I hope it's okay to give some feedback here - I think that Stev said it best when he said that maps made by commitee often fail so I just want to list some things instead of talking directly with the mapper etc.

I don't like the current RL room however, it seems to easy to spam into and there's no real way to defend it if you don't have control - on dm3 there is at least the defense of LG/discharges.

The current RA area needs re-working as it's a bit too strong of an area to hold, and it feels "awkward". I'm not sure how it would go, but I would like to see YA swapped back with RA, and ring then swapped with the YA. That way, the team out of control at least as the YA area, an area which it's possible to steal YA's or hold the area well, and it has a nice passage to quad as well as the LG and cells.

I'll post another comment later about my opinion on anni's I think, I don't feel comfortable making one yet as there have been some changes since I last looked !

I hope there will be a custom tournament soon! That way we can try out these and a few more maps in a more competetive way.

Looks good judging from the screenshots. Bay12 should probably move the quad though.
#6 dk Zalon | 17 Feb 2010 @ 10:40
I agree with ddk, when I was testing the map the YA was still where the RA is now, and that whole area just felt weird to me. It might be different now when it's a RA and you actually would like to keep it safe, but I still think the area feels weird.

But regarding the RL area, I find it pretty fun the way it is now (I guess you can still teleport?) with the way it allows you to attack.
#7 dk Zalon | 17 Feb 2010 @ 10:42
Åke, it was already moved... why would you want to move it again, and where?
#8 se Hooraytio | 17 Feb 2010 @ 10:45
Nice with a new map without pent. Usually ppl try to include all items when making a new map but that isnt always needed imo.
#9 pt mushi | 17 Feb 2010 @ 12:17
I would like to see a map without lg. anni's has it?
#10 fi blAze | 17 Feb 2010 @ 13:39
I would like to see a map without rl. Put 2 lgs instead.

Ssg, ng, sng, gl, lg, ga, ya, ra, mega, ring and pent can be left out in various combinations and the map can still be great. Leaving too many out will make the map unbalanced and/or boring tho. Rl and quad are, however, crucial items for it to be a good qw 4on4 map but you need some of the other items to make it playable.

TB3 displays a good variety of item combinations and no matter what you might think of one specific map all 3 makes for interesting matches. New maps tend to feature every item avaliable ultimately making them just another dm3. There are ofcourse more combinations of items than the 3 used in tb3 and I would like to see that some more. Like having lg but no pent. None of the other popular 4on4 maps (tb3+cmt1b+cmt3+cmt4) have that feature.

Get a mix up, I would like to try cargo bay 12 map!
#13 pl NeFuRii | 17 Feb 2010 @ 14:46
I would love to see 2x rl like in dm2 + lg, but fewer armours than dm2. (say, 1 armor of each kind and 1 mh). And no eyes.
#14 se Hooraytio | 17 Feb 2010 @ 14:52
Yeah, 2 rls means a little more carnage than just 1 rl can provide
#15 no Rikoll | 17 Feb 2010 @ 15:02
Think #13 just explained anni's map. Apart from the eyes.
#16 se Hooraytio | 17 Feb 2010 @ 15:29
Hehe, maybe #13 didnt try annis map yet. Or it just wasnt his cup of tea despite the items used
#17 pl NeFuRii | 17 Feb 2010 @ 15:33

#13 tried annis map, but didnt notice there were two rls. great. i think i like it already
#18 se Hooraytio | 17 Feb 2010 @ 15:36
success \o/
#19 pl NeFuRii | 17 Feb 2010 @ 15:43
but to be honest, with 'not his cup of tea' is slightly right. I turned it off quickly without giving the map much chance. Something felt weird there. Anyways, I guess comments here are not the right place for this discussion.
#20 se Ake Vader | 17 Feb 2010 @ 16:45
@Zalon, Ok, didn't know that. It was also a low-level kind of feedback i gave as i only looked at the screenshot, but i don't like Quad in randomish places. Seems like you have to jump out in the wild open to get it. TB3 maps have quad on places where the ground is uhm...stable(?) and where the room have some chokepoints.

As i said though it was a quick biased reflection so don't put too much weight on it. Nice to see new promising maps for 4on4 play in the community, keep the good work up Anni, Plupp & BP$$$. <3
#21 se Ake Vader | 17 Feb 2010 @ 16:47
...and the reason for not actually trying the maps is not laziness or not wanting to; it's because i pretty much can't as my real computer is in a box without a screen prior to my move abroad. :< T-minus 3 weeks and counting...

First map is for me great idea, more such concept
