S3nft Interview
10 Jul 2007 @ 01:52 by se sassa
S3nft wiki is competing in the Ignition 1on1 rookie competition gave me a few minutes for an interview concerning; how it is to be a rookie nowadays in the world of QW.

#1 Hi and welcome to Quakeworld.nu, can you tell a bit about yourself in IRL?

Hi,
my name is Julian (18 years) and I am from Germany. In my free time I either make music, play PC, do programming stuff or meet with my friends.

#2 How did you start getting into QW?

I was "fascinated" by QW for a long time, and tried to play it several times (fQuake wiki). But because i got bashed so hard on the servers, I played about 10 minutes QW in my whole life... Until I heard about Ignition. I read the news on planetquake.de and thought that this tournament plus my plenty of free time, due to a broken collarbone and summer vacation, would be a perfect opportunity to get into QW. After some days I got into contact with sta-anni, who teaches me sometimes.

#3 What kind of problems did you have when you just started playing?

The biggest problem was my lack of map knowledge. I didnt even know Aerowalk or ztndm3 properly, although I came from Q3 (Question #5). But actually that was the only problem. And when there was something i got stuck with, the guys in #qwrookie always helped out.

#4 What can we improve to make the way of getting into QW easier?

IMHO you guys work perfectly. You always find answers in #qwrookie and the new ezQuake Client is so easy to use.

#5 What´s the global differences between QW and your old game (community, teamplay, gameplay etc..) ?

I came from Q3 OSP CA, which has several big differences. The hardest point is the "item thing". In Q3 CA I didn't have to care about items at all, it's really hard to get used to it. In Q3 CA i mainly played 4on4, which is obviously pretty different from 1on1, what I mainly play in QW. Another difference is the splash radius of GL and RL. The QW splash is so much bigger than the Q3 splash. The only thing of Q3 CA I benefit from, is the movement. The OSP Pm1 movement has some similarities to the QW movement.
The community is also very different. It's so small that everyone knows everyone - thats awesome :)

#6 If I was a beginner and wanted to play quake, what 5 things would you say to me?

In don't really know what i would tell you.. I mean I am a beginner myself ;) So I'll reduce it to 3 points, that I try to handle at the moment.

1. Acquire a proper map knowledge
2. Learn to aim :D
3. Join #qwrookie and play, play, play!

#7 How are the opponents on the servers, is it easy to reach other rookies to play vs? (do we need some rookie servers?)

When I just join some server, I don't expect an even game, but in #qwrookie I alway found an opponent when i wanted to play - it works really good. So I don't think that special rookie servers are needed. Rookie tourneys are enough.

#8 you are participating in Ignition and are up vs Drutten in the qualifying round, what kind of method will you use to beat him?

Getting map control quickly and hunt him all the time... thats the theory, but i don't think that it will work ;)

#9 Free Thursday kenya is up on Thursday, will you compete in it?

I think I will, indeed. Playing different maps and FFA instead of 1on1, brings some variety.

#10 Want to say anything or just whine, do it now!

Everyone, start playing QW so there are some Players that are even worse than me and I don't loose every single game. :>

nice interview. but i wish he had at least tried to bash our handling of rookies a bit so we could work on improving our weak spots!

#7 no Shikari | 10 Jul 2007 @ 22:49
interesting Interview.
I came from q3 1on1 myself, but i did the switch in 2001. It was strange, but after a while i liked qw more (like 6months to a year). Could never think about going back. 4on4 qw is so fun
