Are there any statistics saying most of the quakers use ezQuake nowadays? I thought fuhquake remained the most popular client.

No, FTE is not just hype. Please don't spread rumors when you are having a simple problem. I can understand where you are coming from, but FTE is now decently documented with a wiki located at http://fteqw.com/wiki .

You can download particles via the menu download screen in FTE's options. To access this screen, go to Options - > Downloads. Here, you can download particle scripts from RJLan's setup by going to RJLan and by clicking "Cool Particles!".

You can choose your particle set by going to Options -> FPS Options -> Particle Options -> "Choose Particle Set".

Most of the time, a simple vid_restart is needed.

I hope this helped your problem. If you have any further problems, please post under the "help" section or talk to the FTE team (they're very nice people) on IRC at irc.quakenet.org or irc.enterthegame.com.

first , like any client, download 24 bit map textures (my favorites are the textures from the tenebrae or industri engine)
then, like any client, download new model replacements or new model textures (ruohis's,monkeyrat's, etc.)
then, like any client, download a nicer console background and charset (text) and use the following to set them in the game:

gl_conback "CONBACK_NAME_HERE.png"
gl_font "CHARSET_NAME_HERE.png"

then, like any client, download a nicer skybox and set it using:

r_skybox "skybox_name_here"

then try a config that has something like this in it :

r_dynamic "1"
r_shadows "2"
r_loadlit "2"
gl_bump "1"
gl_specular "1"
r_vertexlight "1"
r_vertexdlights "1"
r_bloodstains "1"
r_stains "2"
r_waterlayers "3"
gl_compress "0"
gl_polyblend "1"
r_part_contentswitch "1"
r_part_beams_textured "1"
r_part_beams "1"
r_part_sparks_textured "1"
r_part_sparks_trifan "1"
r_part_sparks "1"
r_grenadetrail "1"
r_rockettrail "1"
r_particle_tracelimit "100000"
r_part_rain_quantity "1"
r_part_rain "1"
r_bouncysparks "1"
r_explosionlight "1"
r_rocketlight "1"
cl_expsprite "1"
r_powerupglow "1"
cl_maxfps "999"
gl_load24bit "1"
gl_part_flame "1"
gl_smoothmodels "1"
gl_maxdist "8192"
gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
gl_texture_anisotropic_filtering 16 // CAUTION!!!! WILL LAG A WEAK COMPUTER!!! LOWER OR SET TO "0" IF CHOPPY
vid_restart

//EDIT: A FEW MORE THINGS TO INCLUDE:

gl_skyboxdist "8192"
r_bloom 1
r_bloom_intensity 0.3
r_bloom_alpha 0.3
sv_nailhack "1"

cl_nolerp "1"
cl_deadbodyfilter "0"
cl_gibfilter "0"
v_powerupshell "1"
r_powerupglow "1"
r_lightflicker "1"
r_rocketlight "1"
cl_staticsounds "1"
cl_model_bobbing "1"

gl_smoothfont "1"
gl_maxshadowlights "1000"

(when u use this config, every time u load a map that you haven't played yet, the engine needs a minute to build the bumpmapping to make the surfaces appear to have depth, and it will be very choppy while its doing that. it only takes a few minutes and only needs to be done once per map)

brace your self and try not to get mad when it crashes X)
