Hey, you should use Radiant, i use that for mapping, it is really nice.
It takes a bit to get into, but when you got it, nothing beats it.

There is alot of tutorials out there, just google for radiant turorials, just remember that you cannot use that curving stuff that it got, thats only for q3 maps.

Get Radiant here: http://www.qeradiant.com/

and for compiling, all the tools you need are here: http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/ kindly put there by Bengt Jardrup

Maybe someone should write a real thorough guide on how to get started and then we make it a sticky topic in this forum. Someone who knows what he's talking about of course (that excludes me).

If you get the permission by the author then you probably also get the sources. Forget about decompilers, they suck.

You should download the .bsp versions of original DM maps and see how they were constructed!

When i wrote "guide" i meant a guide on how to get started - that is getting the mapping programs to run at all and explain what all the vis and bsp programs that you have to download separately are for. The mapping sequence itself, where you put bits and pieces together in whatever program, is for the mappers themselves to discover or read some guide on. The guide i meant was more like "I want to create my dream map, what do i need and how do i get my tools ready to go?"

u never make a dream map at first try u must practic a lot!!! mapping is not that easy as it look´s u need pacience, skill´s, imaginacion and a lot of wil becouse mapping sometimes give many problems!!!

choose a program u want to use and then u can ask someone to give u a hand!!!

for exemple! i can´t even setup qradient and i manege very good with Quark :\ that´s why i think u must decide what program to use first, this way people can help u easyer...

You can get some technically probably most perfect map sources from RPG and Vondur:
http://rpg.leveldesign.org/rpgdm1.html
http://wp.vondur.net/index.php?page_id=2

and as for a guide (you rather should learn how to find information in the internet before trying to map) try this: http://www.denken.com/dzone/q1mappersguide01.htm
