Is it possible to achieve smoothness on an 60hz laptop?
Right now I'm struggling to be competitive @ 60hz but I'm finding quite impossible.

Am I done or there is hope?

Unfortunately you will never really achieve smoothness with 60hz... At least not in Quakeworld.

I have a very high-powered gaming laptop which like all gaming laptops is 60hz and I try playing on it and it is just not possible.

Your only hope is if you have a display port on your Laptop where you can connect a 120hz or 144hz external monitor (this is what I do and it is perfectly smooth).

Yeah you need to make sure everything else is smooth also.... 1000hz mouse and as high as possible fps (which is a multiple of 77).The optimal is 1001 but 770 and 616fps are also good.

Upgrade to Windows 7 might fix FPS issues

if your mouse does not support 1000hz natively, you cant force it on 10/8/8.1, only windows 7.

It's not clear what you mean by smoothness in this context, but, when I hear that word, I assume it is due to a low framerate.

1000hz polling rate isn't going to be relevant on a 60hz monitor. It's far more important that you make sure you have a good frame rate, and, even on much better setups, the difference between 500hz and 1,000hz is polling the device every 2ms instead of every 1ms. I'd try to avoid 125hz, though, but even that is far less important than graphical performance.

Stev - smoothness refers to all aspects of QW which is a combination of mouse refresh, fps and screen refresh.... you need all 3

You don't need 144 / 160 / 200 / 240 / 32894732894723984723 hertz
this are just MYTHs...

If you can get 75+ you are GOLDEN

I've played for like 10 years with 75 hz, and now I'm playing for 2 years with 85, and it is just PERFECT!
(I don't even notice the difference between 75 and 85....)

from 70 to 75 is already hard to tell de difference.... (but I can, if I pay attention very well), but 75 hertz and 894579842734 hertz is THE SAME for the human brain...

Of course.... if you buy a Monitor that was MADE TO FUNCTION AT 144hz, then ---> OF COURSE it will be better (smoother) with 144 than 75hz, becouse it was MADE FOR IT.....

But you brain should be just PERFECT with a 75+ hz monitor!
Thanks! Bye!

No offense, but you are not a top tier player either. To be able to compete with the best, you need the best setup. 120hz on your monitor is a MINIMUM. 144 is a plus, and if you have an old CRT with higher than that, that's even better.

You are wrong about the human brain, by the way. I don't know what you have read, but the perception of smoothness has no limits.

Kernell... you have been proven wrong so many times about refresh rates and I remember once you even admitted you had never played Quakeworld on a high refresh rate monitor (120hz or higher). If you ever had, you would never say that 75+ is acceptable because for QW it isn't.

People call me crazy (OK, they may be right but probably not in this regard) when they see my 22' CRT monitor. It's so heavy, that the desk can hardly hold it. Asked why I still have this monitor, I reply that flat screen monitors are VERY expensive that can fit my needs for QW.

It's like people who don't understand the difference between bandwidth and latency. 100mbit sounds impressive and state of the art to them. They fail to understand why 1mbit may be better suited for Quakeworld (or other games).

There is also a point that most of the people are missing, which is 'input lag'. This is not at the monitors specs and manufacturers dont talk about that so much. For those who dont know, input lag is the time the monitor takes to get the image displayed, after receiving the signal from the GPU (if you think i am talking about response time you are wrong). There are several 144hz monitors on the market that have huge 'input lag'... Im talking about 30ms or more.

So before buy any of those, google for independent reviews that covers this.

Sorry to derail this a little but I tried to smooth my QW a bit with the instructions from "http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/Smooth_Quake". There it says "Type show vidlag and show fps". As it seems the command "show_vidlag" doesnt exist. I also checked the manual from ezquake and it doesnt show up there either. Anyone know what to do?

Whenever you need to find a command in ezQuake, use:

/cvarlist *[commandkeyword]*

for example:

/cvarlist *vidlag*

In this case, you can use:

/hud_vidlag_show 1

Cheers!

It is "show vidlag" which enables the HUD element called vidlag and not show_vidlag...

OH MY GOD! I spent my whole life,
1. minimizing ezQuake
2. (before, in older PCs, this would fuckup my QW, sometimes having to close/re-open it)
3. browse to \Quake\ezQuake\configs\config.cfg
4. open it
5. Ctrl + F

KKKKKKKkkkkkkkkk, AMAZING MAN! thanks!
