What about that idea of testing direct routes forced on firewalls instead of using qfwd? I bet you could lower general ping by couple of [ms].

I've updated the QW server map. Now the map updates once per hour. Notice the new servers located in Panama.

We also need some SE, DK & FI server admins to add Qizmo ports.

I am going to write another guide soon, much like my guide how to use qwfwd to improve your ping but instead how to use Qizmo to lower your packetloss. For this to work, we need Qizmo with low pings in the above locations.

I'll check it out. Might just need a reboot.

EDIT: Should be back now. After 7 months of automatic billing (without issue) they killed the server and charged me a late fee for non-payment and gave me absolutely zero notification that this had happened. Fucken jerks.

The San Francisco servers have been removed for a couple of reasons... they were barely used and also the 1-year free from Amazon is coming to an end.

Big thanks to Rikoll for this server!

If anyone wants this server replaced simply sign up for Amazon Free Tier and you can setup a server for 1 year again for free (Location: North California)

I am doing some downsizing of the servers that I am paying for and I've dropped the Amsterdam servers down from 4x KTX to 2xKTX (The qwfwd, Qizmo and QTV remain unchanged).

I was also going to shut down the Los Angeles servers completely but I've noticed that people seem to be playing on them quite regularly. Someone want to take over this server? The server is hosted by BudgetVM and the performance/stability is quite good. Server cost is only USD$3.99 per month.

The Miami servers will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.

Dirtbox, thanks for both Melbourne and LA, I am in Adelaide/Australia and rarely able to raise a game in AU, so typically been playing with 200ping in LA.

Ive only recently resurfaced, was away since about 2002. not sure if I am missing some AU community somewhere.

Unfortunately I don't think you're missing much. maybe http://classicfortress.net/ when its ready will help revive AU community.

in other news, my Tokyo Amazon AWS EC2 location has gone offline. the free period of 1 yr is out.

Someone else can take over?
If you don't have experience with running qw servers or AWS, we can take take care of that for you. just let us know.

For the moment, I think the loss of the LA servers is acceptable. We can play on dallas, ny, or miami. There is also a mysterious besmella la server. In the future, if there's demand, I may be interested in admining or financing something.

What, uh, is Besmella? I originally misread dirtbox's post that he was actually shutting down the LA servers, that's why I was confused that there was still one up.

What is Besmella?

I took down the usa.besmella.com servers and Mushi replaced them with another cheaper server.

Further to this I added new servers in New Zealand...
  • nz.besmella.com:28501
  • nz.besmella.com:28502
  • nz.besmella.com:28503
  • nz.besmella.com:30000 (qwfwd)
These should give Los Angeles players around 110-120ms and Australians 60ms+ (I get 65ms but Sydney players may get lower and other states will get even higher). Any americans wanting a game on these servers hit me up so I can add you to our Australian QW FB chat where we organise games...

  • ade.besmella.com:28502
  • ade.besmella.com:28503
  • ade.besmella.com:30000 (qwfwd)

Also added a Qizmo in Auckland:

Much to our surprise, the latest Adelaide servers have been a real hit and have taken over as our most used servers in Australia (despite there being actually no players in this location). As you can see from the Map below, Adelaide is located rather centrally and this is now allowing players from almost all areas to play with similar pings for the fist time ever.

http://i.imgur.com/CkJEd4T.png

Red - Locations with Servers
Yellow - Locations with Players

To give you an idea of scale:
The distance from Melbourne to Adelaide is the same distance as Amsterdam to Copenhagen.
The distance from Melbourne to Perth is the same distance as Barcelona to Moscow.

Previously players in Perth and Darwin would have to play in Melbourne or Sydney which would result in 70-80ms pings and now they can play with 30-45ms. Good result.

AWS free-year deal: added in.badplace.eu:28501 etc in Mumbai.

Thought this would be a decent half-way point between Oz and Europe, but it looks no-where close (far lower pings to Europe than Oz).

Will leave up for a bit incase someone wants to prove me wrong (or India has a secret QW community just waiting for a server to play on) but otherwise I'll move it to a different data centre.

I get 168ms from Melbourne to Mumbai. The exact same ping I get to Los Angeles. What do you ping there from Europe?

Digital Ocean just set up cheap VPS hosting in Bangalore which is like the tech-capital of India. From my work I get 120ms ping... so this might be a better option.

Test it out here from EU: http://speedtest-blr1.digitalocean.com/
