Play more Quake Singleplayer! Here is a bunch of recent releases I would recommend. A variety of single maps, mappacks, small episodes and some more modded stuff below.

Shamelessly pimping Quaddicted. The .zip links are direct, so I hope you won't mind. Always read the readme files! Quakespasm oder DirectQ are recommended engines for this. You will not be able to run most of these in ezQuake or any other QW engine and even if, you might break stuff. If you do not want to manually install these, use the Quake Injector for one-click download and launching.

Looks cool, might try this stuff out...sometime.

On another note: topic moved to "General Discussion".

Can only recommend playing SP Quake and these maps absolutely rule, played all of them, except maybe for some of the Deathmatch classics. Playing SP on these very good maps gets you back to that good old Quake mood I sometimes miss in modernized QW.

Those look like awesome maps but the Q1 single player monsters in limited numbers just are boring to me. I much prefer old Doom style single player monsters, hordes, and getting monsters to fight each other.

Try arwop and ne_ruins then. Also warpspasm.

What's the best "crossover" client for ezQuake users? Are there any that work with same configs, have option for QW physics and over 72/77 fps?

Probably http://quakeone.com/qrack/ but it won't support all these. I highly recommend using no silly weapons binds (or are you a sissy?) and no QW physics unless you want to break things or play the maps completely different than intended. 72 fps what the physics are using so it is completely useless to use anything else.

I'd just like to say thanks for the Quake Injector, Spirit. I usually use FitzQuake though, are the other engines "better"?

Quakespasm is a Fitzquake fork (they used the Fitzquake source code) and has some great improvements. For example support for Ogg Vorbis soundtrack! I highly recommend it instead of Fitzquake.

Cheers!

FTEQW has "FitzQuake protocol 666 support". Does that mean it supports these maps fully? It has independent physics for high fps and other familiar stuff.

No idea. The maps were not built to be played in QuakeWorld. You will ruin the experience the mapper/modder intended if you do so. :]

Don't be scared of standard Quake engines. They don't bite.

Ain't that what we QW'ers already do?

Nah, I am all pro QW and brightskins and stuff for deathmatch. The Netquake scene is playing weird mods and it is laggy and stuff (great fun in LAN with friends though).

Btw Spirit, do you follow the Quake Series Steam forum? There is a lot of people posting there, who have bought quake and they could definitively use your expertise to get into som Quake SP action.

Imho you should make a post there about Quakespasm, the Quake Injector and these custom episodes. You could also include your video guide. I'm sure that if you make a quality post, it will get stickied.

Yeah, I sometimes check and facepalm. Getting more involved there is actually on my agenda and generally getting more exposure for the site (hence this post which I will try to keep updated with new releases).

FTEQW seems to work for arwop. Haven't tried others.

In general, ezQuake (*) can run regular SP maps just fine for the most part. Although sometimes you need to increase its memory heap with -heapsize 64000 or -mem 64 to load larger maps (it seems to allocate memory different than other engines, and asks for more memory even though the same amount is sufficient elsewhere). Of course, using a proper NQ client will ensure the maps work as intended - one less potential source of conflict.

(*) Needless to say, you need the full version of Quake (both paks). nQuake et al do not work.

Not like it matters, but even I use Quakespasm to play SP Quake

If the map comes with a custom progs.dat, ezQuake probably wont work. FTEQW supports normal Quake more or less.

Baker's EngineX works with large maps too and supports the bestweapon command (weapon scripts).

Thanks for posting these Spirit! A Roman Wilderness Of Pain is a real gem (it's great how you really have to fight to get to the hell difficulty :L). On the other hand "mappi" was said to be "definitively one of the best Quake maps ever", and except for the nice ending I didn't find it that special. Ne_ruins looked sweet, but crashed my quakespasm after exiting the first level.

Milton, you did not follow the readme. Try launching with "-zone 2048 -heapsize 192000 +max_edicts 8192"

phil: Thanks for asking, I wrote a guide recently: http://www.quaddicted.com/quake/cooperative

Be aware that sadly many maps will not work in coop.

This map is just awesome, a real pleasure to play!

sv_aim 1

See http://www.quaddicted.com/quake/configuration for some common quirks.

Be aware that there are actually two full maps and some hub stuff. You can play the maps in any order you like. Just make sure you start with "start" (simply load the mod and launch a new SP game).
