j/k this should be built into ezquake. try typing your name while holding down 'ctrl' or 'alt'.

The word "spectator" when you spectate a game are in many different colors. How do you get them?

It was possible to color your nicks like that too, but it's now blocked by both newest ezQuake and mvdsv.

And why is that exactly, I thought mvdsv already filtered out the colors for clients that don't support them?

Couldn't mvdsv just allow the colors in names for clients that support it, and then the client could have an option to filter them out if the user don't want to see fancy colors?

Not even ezQuake supports colored names properly. It bugs on numerous places and as none of us likes colored names, it's not going to get fixed.

"none of us" = ezQuake devs or what?

Ok, I just thought it did.

None of us = a lot of people, including qw-devs. Maybe not all, but still...

Considering how bugged it was, trashing serverside and clientside stuff like demo list and frag messages. It also allowed invisible player nicks not seen by the client. Not to mention the overall christmas lights like nicks and fucked up server logs, I decided it would be best to not allow setinfo (nick, team, whatever) using color codes serverside. Obviously it was also coded to ezQuake after that, maybe they didn't like it either.

seems like devs have a grudge against colors in nicks.

there's this guy that has some characters in front of his nick, like an ascii code for colors and his nick shows up black in-game. the frag messages that have his name in them also turn black/grey. i wonder if he's not using ezquake or just some bug.

Colored nick with the old scrolling nick and rotating skincolor scripts could lead to the ultimate Quake experience.

Yeah, because it fucks up things like I described above, and is (obviously) annoying to fix properly.

i actually think qw's strong point is that it's so very customisable. your nickname is one of the first things you want to customise as a new player. at least it was for me about 12 years ago, that's why i posted the link to the old oqnm. just being a bit a nostalgic i think.

Yeah, but those who don't like it could then filter it out like I described

But I can understand why it's disabled when it breaks all those things, not exactly a high priority issue for someone to fix it.

Back in the day you could use a "name builder" program to create coloured names and the like, and everyone (at least in New Zealand) did it. The one I used to use was called "PM's Cooler Name Builder" or something. That's disappeared off the face of the earth and I'm not sure where you can do it like that anymore.

I have an .scr file with my name in it that sits in ID1. My config has "exec tonto.scr" and I have done this since when I started playing in 1998. I am so used to this coloured name that I rely on it in-game, when I kill someone or they kill me, I instantly recognise the colours up the top of the screen and act accordingly. Eg. If I'm pumping pineapples around a corner and I see my colours pop up, I know I got someone

I think I would be completely lost with just a plain name.

There's a new hud element called "ownfrags" which will show you "You fragged xy" when you frag someone.
/hide all; show ownfrags; scr_newhud 2

If you just want to edit your name in the game, try con_funchars_mode 0 or 1 and use ctrl+, alt+, altgr+ with combination with letters.

I think TonTo is talking about the ordinary white and red found in fonts. Using those is perfectly fine.

But what are the color codes? I found that if I just use a '^' in front of a letter, it turns brown. In Q3 you added a number to it which would get a certain color.
