Hi,

I set up a Quakeworld server using the Team Fortress mod on a Windows XP machine and can connect via my ip address using the Quakeworld client no problems. I'm using naked dsl internet with a USB dongle modem.

The problem is when my friend tries to connect via the Quakeworld client console, it just says attempting to connect over and over again. If they add my IP address to Gamespy, it comes up with 9999 ping. My friend is using a Dlink DSL-200 modem and Windows Vista is his OS. We have disabled the firewall, AVG anti-virus and Spybot Search and Destroy on both computers in an attempt to try and get connected. We also tried adding the ports 27000 and 27500 UDP and TCP to both Windows Firewall exceptions list (even though we already had both firewalls disabled). My friend is able to play other online games without any issues.

Anyone got any ideas as to how we can get around this and get connected?

you should upgrade your server software to either ktx or mvdsv.

http://ktx.qw-dev.net

any problems with the setup, just post here or in the server sub-forum.

Thanks for your replies. I have never come across these setup's previously.
Just wondering with these server setups, is it possible to use the TF mod?

Also, with the problem I'm describing, if I setup one of these servers, do you think that would solve the issue I seem to be having with a friend connecting to me?

TF should definitely work with the newer server versions. the only difference is that they are updated/maintained, so you can actually get support for setting these up. they should be compatible with all (most?) of the older mods.
there have been updates for teamfortress itself, too. i don't think you need it but you can try to get oztf or some other updated version running. i have zero experience with setting up a (tf) server but i'm sure someone here can help with specific questions.
oh, and http://www.quakeservers.net/quakeworld/servers/t=tf/ seems to suggest that mvdsv is the server package of choice for tf stuff?!
about your connection probs i would definitely give an updated server a try first.

Ok, got the mvdsv server up and running.

Again I've got the same issue. I can connect to it via my ip address no problem.
But when my friend tries to connect he gets attempting to connect over and over again. When he adds my ip address to gamespy, my game lists with 9999 ping which means it can't ping it, but other servers are listed with normal pings and he can connect to those so it seems to be something on my end.

I opened up the port that the server was running on under windows firewall both udp and tcp. Don't have any anti-virus or spyware software running.

Any other ideas?

You must have the port open in your modem configuration (27500 unless otherwise specified) and it must be configured to accept 'ICMP echo request' (ping) for it to display in a server browser

portforward.com

The iPGN (iPrimus games network) servers should be back up any day now, which includes a tf server

Did you also tell your wireless router to forward traffic for that port?

If it really is your ISP then have you tried a different port?
Can you use any other server software on your machine from his? (http server/ftp/other games, etc - qtv proxies provide a mini http server). Qizmo allows a method to proxy QW via TCP (though tcpconnect found in fte+ezquake(I think) make it easier), maybe this would have more luck.
But yeah, you can _always_ change port numbers.

No router, just a straight USB modem.

Worked it out, it was the ISP, had to contact them to give me a different APN (for mobile connections) which allowed some of the ports to be open, I just changed the port in the server setup once I figured out the open ports and it worked. I wish I knew that my ISP blocked ports, would've saved me hours of head scratching!
