Sassa interviews HangTime, who explains why hyphen is the hot topic of today, and gives us his views on NQR now and possibly in the future.

- Written by Sassa on 21st of March, 2003

Quote:
1. some general questions, your age, city, name, etc..

My name is David, 23 living in Salisbury (south of england, about 140km from london)

2. for how long have you played QW ? how did you get intouch with it and say a little about your qw background, clans/projects etc...

hmm, i first played quake on 14/10/1997, exact date cos it came preinstalled on pc i got then I played a bit of reaper bots, frogbots etc in NQ.
then I went to uni, and a friend introduced me to QW, so around jan'99 i started playing online
was pretty sucky, uni was firewalled and bad connection so had like 20-80 ping 10-40pl, but gameplay felt really good clans... CB, SF, DN, trash, and now current clan hyphen

3. what are the goals for hyphen ?

same as for most quakers I guess... we enjoy playing qw 4on4, and that's basically all there is.
its not like we are saying "WE MUST WIN THIS LEAGUE, THATS ALL THAT MATTERS!!!11" winning is nice for sure, but really we just wanna have some nice games of quake.

4. what about your great win vs slackers ? that sure was suprising.. will that happen again or are the other "elite" clans warned ?

hehe well nobody was as suprised as me
Basically what happened, goljat came and asked if we wanted to play, I said no because my main PC is broken, would rather wait for another day, but he persuaded us to play by saying they had weak team that day.
We thought hmmm... no paradoks, no gamer... as good a chance to win a map now as ever. we hoped we might stand a chance on dm2, cos thats a map if you get lucky you can take control
and dm3 teamplay has been quite good lately, Anyway, we played pretty well, I think maybe they underestimated us and gave us ping advantage
slebe also liked to gift us some rls on dm3 then dm2 we got slaughtered, hib played pretty much perfect game at low rl
just didnt make any mistakes, always timing mega and rl, and guarding rl for his teammates without actually taking it.
then there was the final map e1m2... SR is known to be strong there, but we had about a 15ms ping advantage which is important on sg map like e1m2.
I was pretty nervous during that game, bored a couple of times with quad but it was a good all round team performance.
I think on another day, with top-team and even pings they would beat us 90% of the time... but they have been good sportsmen and said "gg" with no whining.
as for the future.... yes other teams have been warned as you suggest I dont think they will give us ping advantage or play with weak team as slackers did.
we have played cmf/sr/ds already, so i guess its only FS left from "elite" clans now anyway.

5. if we just look at the clans that you have played vs so far and from the results from last NQR/SD, what team do you think gonna win this years NQR and why?

At the moment it looks like DS and CMF are the two strongest clans, maybe with dag joining DS that will just give them the edge.
cmf is the hardest team we have played, their style seems to match everything we have perfectly. FS/SR should be the other playoff clans, but this season I think final will be cmf-ds

6. ok, enough about other clans, and let go back to hyphen and talk abit about that clan, what players are in that clan and give a little comment about each player and tell us why you got that clan tag ))

I've played with ayv and zero for just over a year now in trash, around the end of last year we went inactive though due to various problems with players being lagged, or no time for qw. Ayv and I enjoy playing together so we looked for a new way to get our "qw-fix"
there were some other good established players in german scene without an active clan, darkwarrior (dk) and raptor
who have played in a lot of top central-eu clans
and then spoink is like the "rising star" of german qw, he's been around quite a long time in weaker clans like porn but has shown his skill so we picked him up too
and I have been impressed with how his teamplay has improved in past months so, we had a team of 5-6 players (zero joined last once his laggy hungarian connection was fixed)
as for the clantag, that was dk's idea, he just wanted to play with clantag of "-"
it was pretty funny, we had clantag but no clan name Hyphen is the english word for the "-" symbol, we thought it sounded pretty cool, and that's how hyphen was born.

7. Lets move to NQR again and their rules/maps what about that riker got kicked out of the league and we dont have any dm6 and we got a bunch of eXmX maps?

Riker broke the rules, he deserved to be punished, admins made the right decision.
I find it's pretty lame that para gets a lot of abuse from some people for it, I've been in that position before having run the UKCL in the past (main 4on4 league in UK)
For a start it's the admin-team decision not just one guy who is "scared of riker"
Para has won two smackdown titles, what does he have to be scared of?
Moving onto maps... no dm6... well I'm not fond of that map in 4on4, but it's pretty lame that it's not allowed when a lot of "lol" maps are
Link returns to admin duty and e1m5 suddenly re-appears on the map list... coincidence?
Can we have hyphen.bsp in nqr5 please?
there's only like 1 clan in the league which wants that map, dm6 is way more popular
0 plays in NQR3 for e1m5 says it all. Anyway, I think this map discussion has been gone over too much already so I better leave it there.

8. what about getting the cmt maps in nqr ? I love the cmt maps and they are pure 4on4 maps or why not make proeXmX 4on4 maps like they did in q3 with osp ?

i'd prefer it stays as it is, nqr-cmt lets people play cmt if they want that, nqr is for people who are happy with standard maps
if nqr takes in CMT maps, I hope a new league will come with only real maps like dm3 and e1m2
villains3 please. ARE YOU LISTENING EGO??
proeXmX is a nice idea
because players already know the basic layout and such
so they can actually spend time learning tactics, and not getting lost (like i do on cmt)
cmt4, thats a map from 1997 was played in uk a lot, then modified for cmt

9. who is EGO ? and tell me little about villians, Im a n00b so I wasent there !

ego is a legend in pro-qw, he ran the villains league which was THE elite league in QW, before smackdown came invite only, no n00bs allowed (well almost), dm3/e1m2/dm2 only
check out E-FF semifinal of villains2 if you wanna watch pure skill. villains was what got me interested in hardcore qw... when i saw clans like ZR playing, it redefined how i thought about 4on4... the way they played, so fast movement from players like rock
i was used to UK style, 1 player camping in same place all game
then came E with trinidy $$$$$$$
and then FF those are the clans which teams model themselves on today, controlling map at speed with interchanging positions

10. Name the best QW-Movie of 2002 (you got dde2, the brazilian movie, bdl2-3, madflava, the australian tf movie etc etc

hmm that brazillain one really impressed me nice effects, good style, good music, good frags
dde2 i nearly fell asleep towards the end, all these pre-scripted jumps etc bores me, i wanna see real in game action
btw when i say pre-scripted, i dont mean they used scripts, i mean its planned beforehand and done in prewar
look at FDE1 crap quality but that ic.dude frag at pent thats real skill, owning players to get pent in a 4on4
not some jumping around dm5, or zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz endif/end midair shots where you get 999999 chances per game and are not thinking about 4on4 game situation

11. what will the perfect final NQR playoff game be ? between what teams?

hyphen vs arcy ? nah seriously, I think DS-CMF as they seem to be top2 atm

12. any last comments to the hyphen fans out there ?

"Prepare to be disappointed"

13. btw, will you be in the TeamSpeak team with Sassa (me) in the CMT/NQR playoffs for better broadcasting than last year.. ?

it's no use me commentating on cmt, since I dont know the maps that well except cmt4 maybe for nqr I could do some games but not all the time

14. hehe ok thnx for this interview, GL in NQR and ffs plz help me correct my spelling mistakes

ok thx sassa, good luck to [0] too!

15. hehe ok

good night and good fight (c) sassa

Hagge - 2003-03-21 21:40:37
nice interview! but I want more as always :[

blitz - 2003-03-22 00:22:53
Long overdue this one, good questions/answers, keep the interviews coming

Sassa - 2003-03-22 01:10:28
will try to give you 3-4 interviews / week

SmalaGreger - 2003-03-22 01:40:40
interview me !!

Janozh - 2003-03-22 01:55:51
e1m5 is fun! well i do play in axemen but hey.. a lot of players from good clans like disorder thinks its funny.. and it is. well u cant get total lockdown like in dm2.. but e1m2 is a popular map.. and in my oppinion its played in a similar way.. loots of flooding and bs-fights.. i like it!

Link - 2003-03-22 02:09:34
Yes HT, you can have hyphen.bsp, as long as it is a good 4on4 map. And e1m5 will be played more times than other maps (since you used the lame "played 0 times in nqr3" argument). Good thing about NQR is the varity of maps, and there is no need to whine really, you get your random map anyway.

HangTime - 2003-03-22 02:38:48
Yeah, but it's combined with 3-2-1-0 points system, which means that two 2-1 victories are only worth the same as a 2-0 win and 1-2 defeat. IMO something like a 4-3-1-0 system should be considered.... you still get a point for winning a map, but winning the overall series of 3 maps is most important. That way you aren't crippled so much by bizarre maps.

razor - 2003-03-22 03:15:27
i agree with you ht

billy - 2003-03-22 08:15:04
or a 3-1-0, if you win 2-0 or 2-1 get 3 points, and losing 1-2 gets you 1 point but still two less then the winning team.

Link - 2003-03-22 11:39:10
You want more difference between a 2-1 win and a 1-2 loss, thats your main argument. With the current system you can say you get a point for each map you win, but you get 1 xtra point for denying the enemy a map victory, as we think 2-0 should be better than 2-1. "That way you aren't crippled so much by bizarre maps" ... eh, lol, back to the map issue? Someone plz start SD6 or something with big 3 only so the whiners can play there =)

HangTime - 2003-03-22 13:38:38
In my system "you get a point for each map you win, but you get 1 xtra point for denying the enemy a map victory, as we think 2-0 should be better than 2-1", and you also get a bonus point for winning the series.

HangTime - 2003-03-22 13:41:55
And if you think winning the series is unimportant, then why bother playing 3 maps at all? Just have a 1-1 tie or 2-0 victory.

reppie - 2003-03-22 14:58:41
i totally agree with HT, 4-3-1-0 seems a lot better to me than the 3-2-1-0 you use now and as for the maps .. yeah i think a LOT of people like to play dm6, so why not allow it? nice interview!

cara - 2003-03-22 15:32:57
what ht says makes sense, not very often but this time.

Eta-Beta - 2003-03-22 15:38:02
zzZzzzZzz Nice thoughts HT :[] and I'm eager to prac you hyph dudes :\

Icce - 2003-03-22 16:17:49
Good interview! And now to something completely different =) Concerning points system: It's good listen to you guys and your suggestions to make a "better", more fair points system. Our intention is to have a continiously development of the league and that won't do without dialogue with you. Ofcourse we wish we had a system that makes all of us satisfied, but I don't know if such a system exists anywere. But we really discuss different suggestions that we hear from you, just wanna mention that. So keep on flooding ideas. Hopefully we're getting better and better as time goes by with developing our structures in NQR.

razor - 2003-03-22 17:04:42
*flood* idea: 4-3-1-0!! *flood* no but it should really be considered.. for as it is now somethings can get really weird.... for example in the cmt leuage... sr won all their games.. but still fs came first.... and even if they would have raped us 2-0 and 500-0... we would have got on 1st place anyway.

HangTime - 2003-03-22 17:38:07
If cara agrees with me it must be a shit idea

blitz - 2003-03-22 18:23:35
yeah but we gave a more consistant performance across the cmt season razor, I see HT's point, but I'm not sure if it matters that much, I think the onus should be on the better teams to learn these "bizarre" maps well enough to win, if they don't then the weaker teams get a point, the league becomes closer and imo is more interesting. If the 4-3-1-0 system was used I think the playoff clans would become even more predictable.

xhrl - 2003-03-22 19:15:07
very cool interview. i agree with ht's point system.....i could write a lot about that, but just giving my name to its support should suffice; otherwise i won't get to talk about dm6. ht is right that dm6 is not a 4v4 map; it seems to become a ffa situation when used as such. it is just the case that a lot of tdm players do like it; i don't like it, and i don't like the fact that those mis-guided players do like it, but map selection is usually based on popularity....however misguided that may be. I long for tournies with only the big3. Also, I enjoy the refreshing custom maps, too; but, let me be clear: they serve different purposes. In the rpickup league in na we are allowing some of the popular 4v4 maps like dm6, etc., but are also playing some fun 4v4 customs. Check out my column or zjz's column on chus for more info on the format. But the whole point of the league is to be For Fun; it is not intensely competitive. When you play the big 3 you are asking whose your daddy? The line between the big 3 and customs may become more blurry as the cutoms become more well-known and accepted over time. Nothing is going to happen quickly in this old game. mAPS ARE like wine, they get better with time....and as qw players and fans, we have a lot of time, for no other game is appearing on the horizon to supplant qw afaik.

HangTime - 2003-03-22 19:28:44
please; use; more; semi-colons; xhrl; k; thx

razor - 2003-03-22 20:27:13
im just saying a team that wins all their games should win at all times.. thats what i think anyway

xhrl - 2003-03-22 20:31:18
i; like; semi-colons; a; lot; but you are right; my writing style over-utilizes the semi-colon.

blixem - 2003-03-22 22:54:43
i was a bit disappointed by the last interview (only because it was so short and only yes/no answers) but this is going to good way. Nice questions , good answers and some length very fun to read keep up the good work

dREk - 2003-03-23 08:50:05
Nice interview Sassa.. About point system I agree with both sides. Since if you get more points winning 2-0 then the "different" maps might be more popular to play just to ensure a map victory and the random map gets important since u still need to be good on dm2/dm3/e1m2 to win. And IF you are capable of controlling the enemy's map you should be deserved by an extra point (2-0 victory). However, when having this current system the scores are more equal and that might make more clans to play when it's so close in the divisions. Just my two cents.

Link - 2003-03-23 16:26:17
Blitz nailed it down I think: "yeah but we gave a more consistant performance across the cmt season". Arsenal can loose vs LFC and ManU but still win the premiership. Why? Because it is a _league_ and not a _tournament_. This is exactly why leagues are popular in IRL sports, because you cant collect the prize until the fat lady sings, even if you beat your hardest rivals. IMO this is the downside with todays "esports": too many tournaments, too few leagues. I have said it before and I will say it again: World Cups and Olympics are nice tournaments, but the everyday league is...yeah...something that happens every day, and that is why it also is appreciated the most. Just think about it for a moment: it is not like Bolton is having an advantage when they go to Old Trafford, they will be pretty much run over. So maybe this does not translate to QW and choice of maps, but I still like to think that having all these maps and the current point system, is just what is correct for a league system for us who plays QW; the teams that shows most consistantcy are the teams that will get most points. If you give an even stronger advantage to 2-0 victories than the current system or/and we reduce maps to a minimum, then I think the difference between the teams will be even higher. So it is really a matter of choice; what do we want? Do we want more difference between the teams, or do we want it as it is right now? Personally; I have never ever seen a better QW league. Why change it? If you want to change it because you think you got "bizzare" maps, then it is not the point system that is wrong, it is a map issue. Discussion are always healthy =)

HangTime - 2003-03-23 18:57:29
Link: I don't "want to change it because you think you got "bizzare" maps", I would want a 4-3-1-0 system regardless of what maps are played, even if it's dm3 only. Also the point razor was making, is that SR have won ALL their games - If Arsenal won all their games, but man utd had a better goal difference, Arsenal would still win the league. So your comparison with football is flawed, in a football system SR would be in first place, not FS.

Link - 2003-03-23 20:57:57
Ye, thats true, but SR lost more maps, so it comes down to what system you want really. 4-3-1-0 would not help in this case, it would have been the same outcome. SR got punished coz they had too many 2-1's. If you hade same pointscore for victory, regardless of 2-0/2-1, then SR would have been in first place. Good thing there is a playoff? =)

HangTime - 2003-03-23 22:56:24
Anyway these comments shouldn't be about maps, it should be everyone telling me how great I am.

g00k - 2003-03-24 09:06:16
You are so great.

Kryten - 2003-03-24 09:54:10
nice interview... on a different note to most of these comments, i disagree that CMT maps should be kept out of NQR. if we have some of the more "bizarre" eXmX maps which are somewhat controversial in their suitability for 4v4 tdm, then I think the better CMT maps should definitely be included - some of them are perfect for 4v4. NQR isn't dm3/dm2/e1m2 and probably never will be.

rx - 2003-03-24 12:37:19
i agree with blitz
i view the point system as a concious effort to get the other maps played
can't say if it will work though

crazymac - 2003-03-25 09:33:35
jesus. in the old days we counted frags!

[+]FK - 2003-04-11 12:35:58
And in the early beginnings, matches was even played on public deathmatch servers! You could cheat by killing your teammates for higher scores.

ZkilfinG - 2003-04-21 16:34:16
Regardless of what pointsystem is used all teams will have the same advantages/disadvantages. If the two top clans in the leage, clan A and B, play a weaker clan that is good at a "bizarre" map both clans will have the same chance of beating them or beeing defeated. The clan that knows all the maps will have a better chance than a clan that only knows the big3. So if clan A is better than B on "bizarre" maps they will win even if clan B beats clan A when they face each other. Good or bad is a matter of taste of course. But for a league I think it's good that the clan with the best overall performance and with the most even performance during the season wins. <> As for what maps to be used, why not let each team get 1 vote/map - in or out? And of course only teams that have been active in the last season gets to vote to avoid cheating. Remember though that this probably will give a result of less than 50% for maps other than the big3, but that won't have to mean they shouldn't be used. Let the maps with highest % be used, the rest obviously most clans don't want to play.

Soma - 2003-05-14 11:21:33
Interview way too focussed on QW. ZzZ
