when i load ezquake in gentoo, i get the menu sound looping over and over and over again. and no other sound starts after that. there is one error about being unable to load libctl.so, so i emerged libctl. that package created /usr/lib/libctl.a . i linked libctl.a to libctl.so.... no dice. any idea if i'm barking up the wrong tree alltogether? i have tried messing with s_mixahead as well as the other linux specific sound variables with no avail. t.i.a. - ben

actually its not, its a ice1817, more specifically an m-audio audiophile 24/96 pci. compiled right into the kernel. works with several other alsa integrated programs such as gaim, xmms, amarok, vlc. so i'm pretty sure its not a sound card issue, but rather a quake/libctl issue. anybody ever experienced this before?

Yead had the same problem and went to #linux.qw and there some wise guy told that I shoud use +set s_device dmix on my command line. First I thought that was some voodoo-shit, but actually that worked. Perhaps it's bug with ezquake, cause every else program runs nicely with default and channel mixing also works (With new alsa version it is software mixing default "device", if hardware doesn't support it). ezquke for some reason wants to use dmix.

sorry for slight hijacking, but (i cannot remember if i asked that in irc) i need help too:
Using "+set s_device dmix" in the commandline removes the echos for me, but the sound is still a good second too late. I tried s_mixahead down to 0.001 but the sounds got weird again and it wasn't "immediate" sound either. Any idea? (I still hope I can keep my onboard sound. )

"step away from the thread! place your mouse and keyboard behind your head and walk backwards towards the sound of my voice"

also, +set s_device dmix completely killed all the sound.

u prolly using alsa (default) and the frucked alsa-sound is known bug in newest ezquake, try oss instead (-noalsa -snddev /dev/dsp to cmdline in ezq1517 or +set s_noalsa 1 +set s_device /dev/dsp in 1754), if you don't get sound at all with those settings try doing these things:
* add yourself to group 'audio' ($ addgroup username audio)
* $ echo 'ezquake-gl.glx 0 0 direct' > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss (might need to chmod it first)

woohoo! "echo 'ezquake-gl.glx 0 0 direct' > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss" did the trick for me!
Thanks.

it's an old trick, why isn't it written in any FAQ? I've had the same problem 3 years ago and I found it after 5 minutes of searching

added it to the "faq" seems to be a lot of problems with ezquake + alsa.. unmaintained code? :F
